Trojans' Thatch logs eagle, shoots even-par 72

GREENSBORO -- University of Mount Olive freshman John Thatch eagled the par-5 third hole, shot an even-par 72 and shares sixth place individually after opening-round play of the 2015 Conference Carolinas men's golf championship.
Thatch finished 1-over on the front side and turned in a 1-under on the back side. He is four shots behind the overall leader heading into today's second round on the Bryan Park links.
Rosewood alum Nick Adams and Sebastian Andersen share 22nd place at 75. Jeff Villalobos (77) is tied for 32nd and completed the Trojans' four-player total of 299 -- four shots behind fifth-place Barton and three behind Pfeiffer U.
On the women's side, Julie Loennechen concluded opening-round play tied for eighth overall among 45 individuals. She shot a 40 on the back nine, but recovered with a 38 on the back side.
Julia Kaeding (81) and Anne Barboteau (81) share 18th place. Stefany King (84) and Denise Dange (88) are tied for 33rd.
UMO logged a team score of 324.
The 54-hole tournament concludes Wednesday.
