Gailmard's single helps UMO break open game in 6th inning

CARY -- Kilgore Gailmard sparked a four-run, sixth-inning uprising and No. 20-ranked University of Mount Olive slipped past in-state foe St. Augustine's, 6-2, at the USA National Baseball Training Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

Tied at 1-1 through five innings, Justin Manning drew a lead-off walk to start the sixth. Joe Koehler and Rob Shipman each reached on an error. Brett Lang got hit a by pitch, which plated Manning to make it 2-1.

Koehler scored on Bretton Gouthro's sacrifice fly to deep left field. DeAndre Allen singled to reload the bases and Gailmard delivered a two-out single up to the middle to score Lang and Shipman.

The Trojans led 5-1.

Lang added an RBI single in the seventh and St. Aug's scratched for a single run in the bottom of the ninth. UMO hurlers Carlos Rodriguez, Hunter Barnett, Brighton Hudson, Tyler Chapell, Jose Serrano, Dario Santangelo, Jordy Farthing and Lang combined for a three-hitter. Serrano earned the win on the bump.

The teams combined for 11 errors.

Mount Olive (21-9 overall) hits the road this weekend for a pivotal Conference Carolinas series against Erskine. The Flying Fleet lead the Trojans by 1 1/2 games in the league standings.

Men's volleyball

WILSON -- Bret Rutledge cranked out a match-high 18 kills as University of Mount Olive dispatched Barton 27-29, 25-18, 29-27, 18-25, 15-12 in Conference Carolinas action Wednesday evening.

Rutledge provided 11 digs on defense for the Trojans, who improved to 12-9 overall and 10-6 against conference opposition this season. Tyler Yanez dished out 52 assists.

Andrew Sydow contributed 16 kills and five blocks.

UMO plays host to Charleston (W. Va.) on Friday. Game time is 7 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.

Women's golf

TRAVELERS REST, S.C. -- University of Mount Olive's Julie Loennechen emerged as the individual champion with a 36-hole total of 151 during the two-day 2015 Cherokee Valley Women's Invitational.

The Trojans also claimed the team crown with a four-player total of 623. Julia Kaeding (153) shared second place with four golfers. Anne Barboteau (159) wound up eighth and Stefany King (165) took 18t.

UMO returns to action April 19 at the season-ending Conference Carolinas Championships in Greensboro.

Softball

FAYETTEVILLE -- Lindsey Russell belted a grand-slam home run in the opener as University of Mount Olive split a twinbill against in-state rival Fayetteville State on Wednesday afternoon.

UMO posted an 11-0 shutout in game one that included a two-RBI double by Lauren McGrath and a two-run homer by Kayleigh Jonas. Madison Johnston, Kylie Ward and Erin Brogan each saw time inside the pitcher's circle.

Johnston got the win.

FSU avoided the sweep with a 7-5 triumph in the nightcap. The Broncos put the game away with a four-run, sixth-inning outburst that included two fielder's choices, a double and an RBI groundout.

Caitlin Ewers absorbed the mound loss.

The Trojans return home Friday for a Conference Carolinas doubleheader against Erskine.
