Burlington School claims 2-0 shutout of WCDS

The Burlington School girls' soccer team had more than enough reasons to be pessimistic about Wednesday's game.

They were coming off of an 8-0 loss the day before and only just 11 players in uniform against Wayne Country Day.

The outlook became brighter after a 2-0 win over the Chargers. Sarah McQueen scored in the 13th and 30th minutes. McQueen dominated the Charger defense all afternoon, outrunning the backline several times throughout the game.

It was part of a Spartan attack that had head coach Ashley Cabral raving after the game.

"(Ashley) is a star player, definitely," she said. "She got some great assists, and I just felt like we got some great midfield play. I was pleased with the way that they were getting the ball back and getting control of it.

"We definitely still need to work on controlling some of those high balls. When they come out of the gate, it always takes them a few minutes to settle down. Once they got settled down, I thought they played great. "

The loss was especially disappointing for Wayne Country Day.

The Chargers had a great chance to gain ground on the playoff race with a division win over a tired and short-handed opponent, only to come out flat from the start.

They had several chances in the first half, including several breakaways that they couldn't finish. Their forwards were consistently bullied off the ball by the Spartans' under-sized defense.

"We kind of wimped out on a couple of things," coach Tim Hall said. "That's just been our season this year. For some reason, we just don't want to go to the ball. And we need to. It's been very tough for us to get that through our heads."

Hall talked about how the most frustrating part of the game was the Charger's inability to put together a scoring drive despite the fact that the team held the ball for the majority of each half.

WCDS attempted 13 shots.

"In the second half we passed the ball well on the outsides and changed our offense to a 4-4-2," he said. "It generated more opportunities for us, but we just couldn't capitalize for some reason."

Hall didn't hide his disappointment after the game.

"You've got to want it, and right now we just don't want it," he said. "This should have been a win, no doubt. This should have been a win."

The Chargers (2-3-0 overall) play host to Pope John Paul on Friday.
