Student-athletes at Wayne Country Day concluded their fall sports season with an awards ceremony Sunday evening.

Coaches presented awards in nine sports.

Among the highlights were the recognition of the Chargers' varsity girls' tennis team, which won its second consecutive N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A dual-team championship on Saturday. WCDS concluded the year 19-1 overall.

Athletics director Michael Taylor presented the players and first-year head coach Mark Phillips with tennis balls. The Chargers ended the season with a 13-match win streak and posted 10 shutouts for the season. Gianna Democko, Jennifer Potts and Taylor Willman each earned all-state recognition. Willman received all-state accolades for the second straight year.

Tony Towsend and Jacob Magera each grabbed a spot on the NCISAA 1-A all-state boys' soccer team. The duo helped lead the Chargers to 13 victories and a second straight quarterfinal-round appearance in the playoffs.

Steven Mau, in his second season, was named the Coastal Plains Independent Conference coach-of-theyear in volleyball. However, Mau will not return next season to coach the Chargers.
