North Duplin's Thurston qualifies for state cross country meet

CARY -- North Duplin sophomore Haley Thurston finished fourth overall in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A mideast regional contested at WakeMed Soccer Park on Saturday.

Thurston ran the 5k (3.1-mile course) in 21 minutes, 21.5 seconds and clinched a spot in next week's state championship meet. She helped the Rebels place sixth overall in the team competition.

On the boys' side, Spring Creek senior Allen Coor took 11th in 18:02. Princeton's Austin Sullivan crossed the line 12th in 18:03.7. Teammate Jose Aguillon posted a 19th-place time of 18:35.1.

Rosewood's Dalton Farmer captured 14th in 18:13.4.

Ryan Miller emerged as North Duplin's top runner with a time of 21:18.

NCISAA 1-A

HENDERSONVILLE -- Wayne Country Day's Jason Jones crossed the finish line 17th overall during the season-ending N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A championship meet ran at Jackson Park.

Jones logged a time of 20:22.63.

The Chargers ended up ninth in the team competition with 95 points.

Wayne Christian's Justin Graham earned a top-20 time of 20:28.01 and helped the perennially-strong Eagles claim eighth in the team portion of the event.

On the girls' side, Wayne Country Day received top-30 performances from Elizabeth Bailey (20th, 26:25.81), Margaret Tanner (24th, 27:00.02), Natalie Bailey (26th, 27:15.4) and Crawford Tanner (29th, 28:32.49).

The Chargers placed sixth as a team.

3-A East

RED OAK -- Charles B. Aycock's Joseph Mooneyham emerged as the county's lone runner among the top 50 competitors during the NCHSAA 3-A east regional contested at Red Oak Middle School.

Mooneyham ran the 5K course in 18:08.

Zach Evans led Eastern Wayne with a time of 19:31.

Brandon Biggins paced Southern Wayne with an 18:34.

In girls' action, Aycock's Sarah Gregory wound up 33rd in 21:54.

Tricia Malcolm paced Eastern Wayne with a 24:48, while Southern Wayne teammates Dixie Ramirez (25:10) and Arineida Morales (25:31) finished within three spots of each other.
