FAYETTEVILLE -- Tony Townsend buried the ball in the corner of the net in the closing minutes of regulation to allow Wayne Country Day to escape with a 2-1 win over Freedom Christian in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference play.
"We controlled the game in the first half and totally switched off after the break," WCDS coach Steven Ellis said. "We let them dictate the play and movement of the ball. Tony didn't have the greatest of games but took one of his only chances and won it for us at the end. It's a short and narrow field which doesn't really suit the way the play. Its a tough place to go and get a result."
Hunter Bryson scored the first goal for the Chargers. Charlie Roethling and Danny Lee each contributed assists.
WCDS (11-4-1 overall, 3-1 CPIC) faces Freedom Christian at home next Tuesday.
