Boys' soccer
North Lenoir 4, Greene Central 3
* Mike Bednarz converted a 25-yard free kick in the 53rd minute and it turned into the eventual game-winning goal in North Lenoir's 4-3 triumph over Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference rival Greene Central on Friday evening.
The Hawks built a 2-0 advantage before halftime on Braxton Greene's header off of Nic Kennedy's assist and Bednarz's first goal on a pass from Marcos Campos.
Campos extended NL's lead to 3-0 in the 41st minute on Bednarz's assist.
Greene Central pulled to within 3-2 before Bednarz connected again. The Rams added a late goal to account for the final margin.
NL keeper Jacob Baird recorded nine saves between the pipes.
The Hawks (5-8-1 overall, 2-0-0 ECC) visit South Lenoir on Monday.
Greenfield 3, Wayne Country Day 2
* WILSON -- Greenfield caught a break in the 76th minute and upended rival Wayne Country Day, 3-2, in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference play Friday evening.
The Knights' game-winning goal was a deflection off of the post.
Trailing 2-0, the Chargers got on the board on Charlie Roethling's penalty kick after Tony Townsend was taken down inside the box. John Thompson notched the equalizer with a low, driving shot into the corner of the net from the edge of the 18-yard box.
"We played well and did great to get back into the game after going (down) 2-0," WCDS head coach Steve Ellis said. "We took it to them and got level by half, playing better soccer. We conceded late with a freakish goal that we couldn't do anything about.
"(An) overall good job by the lads, but luck left us at the end."
Wayne Country Day (9-4-1 overall) plays host to Northwood Temple on Monday.
