NEWTON GROVE -- Mike Woodard rushed for two touchdowns and Rosewood's defense played a stout second half during a 15-7 triumph over Hobbton in the Carolina 1-A Conference opener for both teams Friday evening.

Woodard rambled for a game-high 176 yards and two touchdowns -- a 7-yard second-quarter run and a 9-yard fourth-quarter run.

Quarterback Cameron Helt completed four passes for 49 yards, but supplied a season- and career-best 146 yards rushing.

"I'm really proud of our players," RHS head coach Robert Britt said. "We executed well most of the night. Mike was a workhorse for us all night. We made some mistakes in the offensive drives that we have to correct.

"However, tonight was the first game that we got chunk rushing yards consistently from the quarterback position, and I was glad to see that."

Marque Surles' 1-yard plunge capped an 89-yard scoring drive by the Wildcats with just over 2 minutes left in the opening quarter. Hobbton wouldn't muster much offense the rest of the game.

Rosewood's defense held Hobbton to minus-16 yards rushing in the second half and recorded a fourth-quarter safety after the Wildcats had made a goal-line stand.

The Eagles (3-3 overall, 1-0 CC) put their three-game win streak on the line Friday at No. 3-ranked James Kenan. The Tigers (4-1) stunned No. 2-ranked Princeton on Friday.

* JACKSONVILLE -- North Duplin's defense held Lejeune to 105 yards of total offense and forced three turnovers in a 21-0, non-conference victory over the Devilpups on Friday evening.

Emiliano Mora and Malik Williams emerged as the offensive leaders for the Rebels. Mora, who has fully recovered from a high ankle sprain, rambled for 109 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown on 22 totes.

Williams provided a season-best 91 yards and 1-yard touchdown on 19 carries. Kaleb Brock and quarterback JP Payton rushed for 24 and 84 yards, respectively.

Mora threw a 24-yard completion to Brock.

The Devilpups, the 1-A eastern runners-up last season, suffered their fourth shutout loss of the season and sixth overall.

North Duplin (3-2 overall) launches its Carolina 1-A Conference season Friday at Lakewood.

New Bern 44, C.B. Aycock 0

* PIKEVILLE -- Division I recruit Mike Hughes led No. 2-ranked and unbeaten New Bern to a 44-0 triumph over Charles B. Aycock at Hardy Talton Stadium on Friday evening.

It was the Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference opener for both teams.

Hughes rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns, and threw for another 35 yards. The Bears broke the game open with a 23-point surge over the final seven minutes of the second quarter.

The Bears' defense held the Golden Falcons to 58 yards of total offense. Quarterback TJ Morrow led the ground game with 22 yards and his lone pass completion netted zero yards.

The Monarchs' defense recorded 12 stops behind the line of scrimmage. Rayvonne Barnes had the Cougars' longest run -- a 12-yard gallop on the first play of the game.

Goldsboro managed three first downs and punted eight times.

The Cougars (0-5 overall) conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule at home Friday against state-ranked Scotland County. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.

Gary Williams led the Gators' attack with 64 yards rushing.

Spring Creek (1-4 overall) came up empty on two red-zone possessions.

"They were very good defensively," SC head coach Aaron Sanders said. "We've got several characteristics ... at times we look good, and other times you can tell we have young playing in key positions.

"The kids are playing hard and we're a little beat up right now, but we just have to keep chugging along."

The Gators entertain Hobbton next Friday. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. in "The Swamp."
