Wayne County Post 11 falls to Wilson Post 13

WILSON -- Wilson Post 13 turned a double play and triple play defensively, and claimed an 8-5 victory over Area I East rival Wayne County Post 11 at historic Fleming Stadium on a balmy Thursday evening.

The loss snapped Wayne County's four-game win streak.

Post 11 built a three-run advantage during its first at-bat.

A walk and singles by Ryan Faucette and Chad Spurgeon led to the game's first run. Coy Barnett collected his lone hit -- a two-RBI double that pushed Faucette and Spurgeon across the plate for the 3-0 advantage.

Wilson closed to within 3-2 after two innings.

In the third, Spurgeon hit a line drive to Post 13 first baseman Chase Long. Long stepped on the bag to double up the runner and threw to shortstop Hunter Hackett to complete a rare triple play.

Colin Wilson's two-RBI double to left field pushed Wilson ahead for good, 5-3, in the bottom of the third inning. Post 13 tacked on a single run in the fifth and added two more in the sixth.

Wayne County right-hander Jackson Hayes, who has signed with Southeastern Community College, surrendered six runs (five earned) on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings on the bump. It was Hayes' first loss in three decisions this season.

"Jackson struggled finding the (strike) zone early and when he did, he left the ball up," Post 11 head coach Jason Sherrer said.

Greg Johnson tossed 3 1/3 innings of two-hit, four-strikeout relief.

Allen Coor and Ryan Kelly (RBI) paced the Post 11 offense with two hits apiece. Garrett Joyner (RBI), Kevin Williams, Faucette, Spurgeon (RBI) and Barnett each concluded the night with one hit.

Nick Sanders earned the win relief of Post 13 starter Colton Griffin. The duo combined for 10 strikeouts and held Post 11 to just nine hits on the night.

"We left a lot of runners in scoring position (and) struggled to make adjustments at the plate leading to 10 strikeouts," Sherrer said.

Wayne County (6-4-1 overall, 5-2 East) steps outside division play with a contest Saturday at Apex. Post 11 is the guest of Duplin-Sampson on Monday, and returns home Tuesday against Kinston.

All three games start at 7 p.m.
