UMO alum Jasmine McDonald among NCAA Woman of the Year nominees

HIGH POINT -- University of Mount Olive graduate Jasmine McDonald is one of two Conference Carolinas student-athletes nominated for the prestigious 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

The award recognizes excellence in athletics, academics and service and leadership. McDonald's selection marks the eighth time in the last nine years at least one Mount Olive student-athlete has represented Conference Carolinas for the award.

A first-team all-Conference Carolinas performer, McDonald averaged a double-double for the women's basketball team this past winter. She became the first-ever player -- male or female -- in Trojan basketball history to record two triple-doubles in the same season. The Lorton, Va., native accomplished the feat against Virginia Union and Erskine (S.C.) College.

McDonald earned Conference Carolinas tournament MVP honors as a junior and helped lead the Trojans to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional. UMO advanced to the tournament championship game in three of four seasons with McDonald on the court.

In the classroom, McDonald majored in business administration and earned a spot on the Conference Carolinas Presidential Honor Roll in multiple semesters. She has served both her hometown and Mount Olive in different capacities that include assisting with the girls' teams at her prep alma mater, Mt. Vernon, and Virginia Cardinals Association.

McDonald is UMO's second women's basketball student-athlete to be nominated by Conference Carolinas for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Tomeka Prichard was a Conference Carolinas nominee in 2009. In 2008, women's volleyball/track and field student-athlete Samantha Mitchell finished among nine finalists for the award.

Mount Olive student-athletes represented Conference Carolinas in each of the first seven years that conferences submitted nominees for the award.
