WILSON -- Wake Forest plated a pair of seventh-inning runs and handed in-state rival East Carolina a 5-4, non-conference loss at historic Fleming Stadium on a soggy Wednesday evening.
The teams endured a 98-minute rain delay.
Trailing 4-2, the Demon Deacons (12-6 overall) pulled within 4-3 after six innings. In the seventh, Wake pounded ECU reliever Ryan Williams for four hits, including Charlie Morgan's game-winning RBI single.
Williams took the mound loss.
Wake Forest's Garrett Kelly claimed his first decision with two innings of one-hit scoreless relief. The Deacons' bullpen permitted just one hit and logged five strikeouts in the final five innings.
The Pirates (8-9) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top half of the first inning. Bryce Harman mashed his first-ever collegiate home run -- a three-run shot over the right-field wall.
Overall, ECU managed just four hits on the night. Zac Houchins extended his hitting streak to six games with a 1-for-3 effort. Garrett Brooks batted 1-for-4.
