Southern Wayne soccer falls in OT

DUDLEY - For one hundred minutes Southern Wayne and White Oak were dead even.

Minute 101 proved to be the difference.

Austin Billiot scored the game-winning goal in the first minute of sudden death overtime to lift the Vikings to a 2-1 win on Saturday night in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A state playoffs.

White Oak (14-9-1) advanced to play No. 2-seed Terry Sanford (22-1-1) in the third round on Tuesday.

"My guys, I've got to give it up to them," Vikings' head coach Buddy Carroll said. "We didn't get the breaks. It's crunch time and we're getting the breaks now."

White Oak controlled the possession throughout the first half but failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Billiot's shot from the top of the 18-yard box was saved by Saints' keeper Michel Peterson. Billiot's shot from inside the 18-yard box in the 18th minute was also saved by Peterson.

The Vikings also failed to convert on three corner kicks in the opening 40 minutes.

Southern Wayne's best scoring chance of the first half came on Obens Tilus' long free kick that sailed just over the goal.

White Oak just missed taking the lead in the 42nd minute as Scottie White was all alone on the backside of the 18-yard box. White collected a rebound but his shot missed wide of the goal.

The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute when Desir Deufort gathered up a rebound in the 18-yard box and slipped a shot past Vikings' keeper Rene Perez.

Billiot tied the game at 1-1 in the 60th minute as he settled a rebound in the 18-yard box and tucked a shot into the back of the net.

The two teams played 20 minutes of scoreless soccer in overtime before Billiot caught Peterson out of position and slipped the game-winner into the back of the net in the first minute of sudden death. White Oak finished with a 14-8 edge in shots on goal.

"We've had those opportunities," Carroll said. "I've stressed to the guys, 'keep pushing, go to the next play if things don't go your way.' (Billiot) had like three or four opportunities early in the game and some towards the end of the game. Right opportunity, right time and he put it away for us. I'm proud of him."

Southern Wayne concluded its season 10-7-1.

"Our guys poured the hearts and souls out," Saints' assistant coach Luis Castaneda said. "The loss hurts but they have nothing to be ashamed of. We feel like this program is headed in the right direction."
