With less than a minute to play in the first half, Charles B. Aycock scored a touchdown to pull within 21-14 against archrival Eastern Wayne on Friday night.

The Golden Falcons kicked the ball deep and made a tackle at the 39-yard line with 40 seconds on the clock. Eastern Wayne head coach Bubba Williams ignored the safe play call and elected to give his team a chance to get the touchdown back.

The result was a 61-yard scoring strike from Mitch Pike to Dayshawn Pridgen. The Warriors led 28-14 at halftime.

"That play was just the result of taking a chance and having a kid make a play," Williams said. "(Dayshawn) ran by the corner and Mitch made a good throw over the top. It really gave us some momentum going into the locker room."

Nearly even?

CALYPSO -- The final score was one-sided.

The overall statistics favored North Duplin.

But the most interesting numbers were total offensive plays during the Rebels' 35-13 romp over Hobbton on Friday evening. The Wildcats held a slim 49-46 edge.

Most of those offensive plays occurred in the fourth quarter against the Rebels' second-string defense. Hobbton logged scoring drives of 87 and 68 yards that took 18 total plays, and nearly eight minutes off of the clock.

That's some good 'D'

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season champion James Kenan recorded its third shutout of the season, and second in the last three games during its 63-0 victory over Spring Creek.

The No. 1-ranked Tigers limited the Gators to one first down and forced three turnovers. Spring Creek managed 74 yards of total offense.

Sam Melvin led Kenan's defense with four stops. A total of 20 players recorded at least one tackle on the night.

History lesson

CALYPSO -- It's been a year of renewing Carolina 1-A Conference rivalries since the latest realignment officially took place last summer.

North Duplin defeated Hobbton for the third consecutive year and evened the series at 22-all. The Rebels have won three straight over the Wildcats for the first time since 1996-98.

Sharing the wealth

La GRANGE -- Goldsboro distributed its 329 rushing yards among five different ball carriers against North Lenoir on Monday.

Rasheid Malette led the Cougars with 236 yards on 23 carriers. Toric Best and Ricardo Woodard combined for 55 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

Rayvonne Barnes added 49 rushing yards.

"Rayvonne Barnes did a wonderful job running the ball and hitting the hole hard," Goldsboro head coach Eric Reid said. "Ricardo is a guy that we've been wanting to play a whole lot, but given the fact of what he does on defense for us we haven't used him on offense as much.

"But tonight, he came up big for us."
