BURLINGTON -- East regional champions Ashton Walker and the doubles of Faith and Savannah Sutton each advanced to quarterfinal-round play of the 2013 N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A women's tennis individual championships.

Walker, a junior at Charles B. Aycock, rallied past Patton's Taylor Frederickson 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 in the first round. Cox Mill's Sarah Jiang defeated Walker 6-1, 6-2 in the afternoon session.

Jiang lost to Weddington's Heide Swope in the finals.

Eastern Wayne's senior pair of Sutton-Sutton remained unbeaten in 20 outings with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Asheville's Kristie Kim-Adelyn Luke. The duo dropped a season-ending, second-round match to Cardinal Gibbons' tandem of Natalie Freeman-Summer Jacobs. Freeman-Jacobs finished state runners-up to teammates Devin Knors and Lizzie Galush.

Cardinal Gibbons eliminated Eastern Wayne from the dual-team playoffs last week.

In 1-A play, North Duplin sophomore Julissa Quintanilla endured a season-ending 6-2, 6-1 loss to Stone Day's Meghan Hedgepeth in the first round. Quintanilla and her Rebel teammates won their first-ever Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season championship, and lost to Raleigh Charter in the second-round of the dual-team playoffs.
