SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Wingate exploded for five fifth-inning runs and handed Mount Olive College a season-ending, 8-0 mercy-rule defeat on day two of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional #1 softball tournament at Armstrong Atlantic State University.

The fourth-seeded Trojans tumbled into the losers' bracket with an 8-2, opening-loss to No. 16-ranked Columbus State on Friday afternoon.

MOC ended the year 34-15 overall.

The eighth-seeded Bulldogs limited the Trojans to three hits. Mount Olive stranded runners in scoring position in three consecutive innings, and couldn't overcome pivotal defensive miscues.

Wingate (33-21-1) led 3-0 going into the bottom of the fifth and capitalized on four Trojan errors to seal the run-rule win. Kayla Saliga and Kelsey Maffucci both doubled in the inning. The final three runs of the game occurred on a force out at second base, and infield errors on the next two at bats.

The Bulldogs avenged two regular-season losses to the Trojans.

Senior catcher Rebekah McDaniel, senior right fielder Danielle Mitchell and senior designated player/pitcher Christie Wright each played their final game for MOC.
