Eastern Wayne alum hired by East Miss. Community College

SCOOBA, Miss. -- Michael Morgan has been hired as an assistant women's basketball coach at East Mississippi Community College after approval by the school president and vice president.

Morgan, an Eastern Wayne High alum, spent last season as an assistant women's basketball coach at St. Joseph's (Ind.) College, an NCAA Division II program in Rensselear, Ind. He served as the Pumas' recruiting coordinator, handled scouting responsibilities of the team's opponents and worked daily with SJC's post and perimeter players.

"I am extremely excited about bringing Coach 'Red' (Morgan) into our women's basketball program here at EMCC," said head coach Sharon Thompson said. "His character, tireless work ethic and compassion will be key assets in our recruiting efforts as well as with the day-to-day development of our student-athletes."

Morgan began his coaching experience in Florida, where he grew up.

While completing coursework for his bachelor's degree in Biblical Studies with an emphasis in youth from Trinity (Fla.) College, Morgan spent two seasons as the head girls' basketball coach at Oldsmar Christian School. His teams compiled a 37-16 record.

The next season, Morgan headed to Faith Baptist Christian School in Brandon, Fla., and guided the Lady Eagles to 48 wins and a runner-up finish in the Sunshine Independent Athletic Association. As he did at Oldsmar, Morgan also served as the program's fundraising coordinator in creating a $30,000 budget for season expenses.

Morgan started his collegiate basketball career at North Carolina A&T University and transferred to N.C. Wesleyan for his sophomore year. Morgan sat out the next two years and wound up at NCCAA Division II member Trinity (Fla.) College.

Morgan earned all-South Region first-team honors during the 2007-08 season and finished runner-up in South Region player-of-the-year voting. He ranked among the NCCAA Division II national leaders in several statistical categories as a junior, and capped his collegiate career by earning all-South Region honorable mention accolades as a senior.

Upon graduating from Eastern Wayne in 2001, Morgan served two years in the United States Air Force. He divided his enlistment time between Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Tex., and Pope Air Force Base.

Morgan's father and step-mother, John and Jennifer Morgan, reside in Goldsboro.
