Saints' Price, Outlaw sign with Catawba Valley CC

Making the transition from high school to college presents a few distinct challenges.

Southern Wayne basketball standouts Jamiel Price and Ronnell Outlaw will face those challenges together. The pair signed their respective letters of intent to play basketball at Catawba Valley Community College next season.

The opportunity to fit in immediately in the Buccaneers' offense appealed to the pair of shooters.

"We talked to the coach from Catawba Valley and he told us the thing that the team needed most going into next season was shooters," Price said. "We went up there and met some of the guys and played a little bit with them, and we really seemed to work well with them."

Price, an athletic offensive player who can play shooting guard or small forward, averaged 13.5 points and three rebounds per game during his senior season with the Saints.

"Jamiel is a kid with a ton of athletic ability," Southern Wayne head coach Dwight Smith said. "He can play three different positions on offense and he can defend a wide variety of players on the defensive end. He has a lot of potential."

Outlaw may be the most gifted pure shooter in Wayne County coming out of high school this year. He averaged 13.4 points and two steals per game as a senior.

"I feel like my game can translate to the college level because every team can use more offense," Outlaw said. "I know I need to get in better shape over the summer and continue to work on my ball handling."

The Catawba Valley coaching staff was impressed with Outlaw's ability to create his own shot as well as his ability to pass the ball in traffic during his workouts.

"Ronnell has the ability to play either guard spot," Smith said. "We used him at shooting guard primarily, but he is an excellent passer and he finds his teammates when they are in position to score. With a little work I think he can play the point at the next level."

Catawba Valley finished 20-11 overall this past season. The Buccaneers lost to Louisburg College in the Region X tournament.

Price and Outlaw will continue a strong Wayne County pipeline to Catawba Valley. Former Spring Creek standout Rashaun Edwards and former Wayne Country Day star Brandon McCarter currently play for the Buccaneers.
