Malette, Frasier each bring home silver medal from 1A state meet

GREENSBORO -- Goldsboro's Rasheid Malette and Princeton's Johnny Frasier each finished state runner-up during the 2013 N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A track and field championship meet contested at North Carolina A&T on Friday afternoon.

Malette claimed the silver medal in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 40.79 seconds. Heide Trask's Ethan Bischof won the event in 39.82.

Frasier earned the 100-meter dash silver medal in 10.74 seconds. Cherryville junior Trentavis Friday broke the tape in 10.48.

A sophomore sprinter, Frasier ran the second leg on the Bulldogs' bronze medal-winning 400-meter relay team. Kam McDougald, Phillip Hare and Cody Garner also contributed to the third-place effort.

Princeton's Lane Dougherty took eighth in the pole vault.

The Cougars' 1,600 relay of Keyshawn Jenkins, Antonio Futrelle, Christian Martens and Jaleel Cook ran eighth overall. Martens placed 10th in the 400 dash.

Spring Creek's Carlos Osorio Garcia ended up seventh in the shot put. Teammate Xavier Aycock was 13th in the long jump.

On the girls' side, Goldsboro's foursome of Nekooshia Kornegay, Kaylah James, Josephine Grant and Kimberley Martin crossed the line fifth overall in the 400 relay.

Martin and James ended up 11th and 15th, respectively, in the 200 dash. Teammates Grayson Collins and Nichole Mehlaff placed among the top 14 in their respective distance events. Miranda Simmons grabbed 16th in the 400 dash.

Rosewood's Alysse Atwell took sixth in the 100 hurdles and 11th in the 300 hurdles. Sophomore Lexi Mercer was seventh in the high jump and Mideast Regional champ Brynna Lee grabbed eighth place in the pole vault.

Lee, Atwell, Mercer and Crystal Allen helped the Eagles take 10th in the meet-ending 1,600 relay.
