Baseball

C.B. Aycock 10,

Cleveland 5

* PIKEVILLE -- Bobby Hampton slugged a third-inning home run and Charles B. Aycock doubled up Cleveland, 10-5, in an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference contest at Charles Davis Field on Friday evening.

Hampton finished 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Golden Falcons, who improved to 6-2 overall this season and 3-1 against ECC opposition. Hampton also threw one inning of one-hit relief behind winning pitcher Gregory Johnson.

Johnson yielded three runs (two earned) on six hits, walked two and struck out four in a six-inning stint.

Noah West paced the Aycock offense with three hits and three RBI. Garrett Joyner batted 2-for-4 with an RBI. Tim Naughton contributed two hits and an RBI.

"This conference, everybody from top to bottom is almost evenly matched," CBA head coach Charles Davis said. "Cleveland is much improved and I think everybody has seen that after they beat North Lenoir and Southern Wayne.

"This was a good win for us."

The Golden Falcons travel to Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

Dixon 1,

Spring Creek 0

* HOLLY RIDGE -- JP Padgett and Quinn Ryan combined for a four-hitter, and perennial 1-A powerhouse Dixon handed Spring Creek a 1-0 loss on Friday afternoon.

Padgett and Ryan combined for six strikeouts.

The Gators' tandem of Luke and Logan Miller combined for a five-hitter on the mound. Luke endured the mound loss, while Logan tossed one inning of no-hit relief. Each had one hit offensively.

Tre Hammonds and Hunter Walker each batted 1-for-3 for the Gators, who fell to 3-4 overall this season.

Dixon scored the lone run in the fifth inning.

Spring Creek opens Carolina 1-A Conference play at home Tuesday against Princeton.

Greene Central 16,

Tarboro 6

* SNOW HILL -- Tarboro dealt Greene Central a 4-3 loss in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play Friday evening.

Mason Head had two hits for the Rams.

James Head took the pitching loss.

Greene Central (2-2 overall, 1-1 EPC) travels to Kinston on Tuesday.

Grace-Sanford 5,

Wayne Country Day 1

* SANFORD -- Wayne Country Day plated the game's first run, but Grace Christian of Sanford claimed a 5-1, non-conference victory on Friday afternoon.

Mitch Turnage led the Chargers' offense with three hits. Cody Neal added two hits and an RBI.

Neal recorded three strikeouts in 42/3 innings of work on the mound. The senior right-hander surrendered five runs (two earned) on five hits and six walks.

John Strickland provided 11/3 innings of one-strikeout relief.

The Chargers (0-3 overall) travels to East Wake Academy on Tuesday.

Girls' soccer

Eastern Wayne 5,

Southern Wayne 3

* DUDLEY -- Eastern Wayne notched its first win of the season, a 5-3 triumph over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Southern Wayne at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.

Warriors sophomore Megan Mozingo notched a hat trick (three goals) and received second-half assists from Cheyenne Craft and Grace Delbridge.

Kristina Muses scored in the 49th minute off Anne Hulse's assist, which tied the game at 2-2. Cameron Dove's goal 13 minutes later gave the Warriors a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Hulse capped Eastern Wayne's scoring in the 74th minute on an unassisted goal.

Cynthia Rivera scored two goals for the Saints. Maria Gutierrez added one goal.

Southern Wayne fell to 3-4-0 overall and 0-3-0 in ECC play. The Warriors (1-1-0, 1-1-0) entertain C.B. Aycock on Tuesday.

Wayne Country Day 2, Grace-Sanford 2

* SANFORD -- Short-handed Wayne Country Day battled to a 2-2, non-conference draw against Grace Christian of Sanford on Friday afternoon.

The Chargers traveled without six players, who missed the game due to sickness and injuries.

Maggie O'Daniel and Sarah Best scored goals two minutes apart in the opening half to give WCDS a 2-1 advantage. Mollie Catherine McDonald assisted on O'Daniel's goal.

Grace notched the equalizing goal in the 23rd minute.

"There were plenty of chances in the second half, but neither team could get one to go into the net," WCDS head coach Paul Casey said.

The Chargers (2-0-1 overall) played South Brunswick in The Brittany on Saturday.

Princeton 0, South Johnston 0

* Amber Hill recorded 10 saves and logged her second shutout of the season during Princeton's 0-0 draw against county rival South Johnston.

The Dogs are 3-2-1 overall this season.

Softball

Cleveland 9, C.B. Aycock 6

* PIKEVILLE -- Cleveland tallied four seventh-inning runs and remained unbeaten in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play with a 9-6 victory over Charles B. Aycock on Friday evening.

The Rams climbed to 4-0 in the ECC.

Abbie Walton had all three of the Golden Falcons' hits. She doubled twice, scored two runs and collected two RBI.

Cierra Harris and Katie Gay each had two RBI.

Meredith Burroughs endured the pitching loss. The right-hander recorded 12 strikeouts, but permitted nine runs (seven earned) on 10 hits and two walks.

C.B. Aycock (4-3 overall, 3-1 ECC) travels to D.H. Conley on Monday.

Fike 7, Rosewood 4

* Wilson Fike's offense came alive during the final three innings of a come-from-behind, 7-4 triumph over Rosewood on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Demons trailed 4-0 after four innings and sealed the outcome with a four-run, seventh-inning surge.

Jordan DuBose tripled, stole two bases and collected two RBI in a 3-for-4 performance. Alicia Burns batted 2-for-3. Callie Thornton and Scout Anderson each contributed one hit. Thornton also stole a base.

The Eagles (4-2 overall) visit Fike on Monday.

North Duplin 12, James Kenan 7

* Kayla Alphin batted 3-for-4 and North Duplin knocked off county foe James Kenan, 12-7.

Casey Thornton and Raychel Barwick logged two hits apiece. Shaily McCarty and Chesney Brown each had one hit.

Mikayla Koch claimed the pitching win, striking out seven and scattering five hits in a complete-game effort.

The Rebels (3-3 overall) launch their Carolina 1-A Conference season at Goldsboro on Tuesday.

Golf

Morgan cards ace

* First-time father Jamie Morgan recorded a hole-in-one on the par-4, No. 13 layout at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course.

The hole is 304 yards in length.

Playing partners Dave Richard, Tommy King and Sam Langley witnessed the feat. Morgan's wife, Heather, and his daughter, Kenlee, were also in the group.

JV sports

* Baseball: Eastern Wayne 6, Southern Wayne 1 -- Collin Nix allowed eight hits in a complete-game effort for Eastern Wayne. Sawyer Smith recorded two hits. Lee Daniels, Hayden Ware and Devonte Corum contributed one hit apiece.

* Baseball: Greene Central 16, Tarboro 6 -- Hunter Murphy pounded out four hits and drove in four runs for the Rams. Graham Anderson provided three hits and two RBI. Will Creech (two RBI) and Bailey Ormond (RBI) recorded two hits apiece. Nick Kearney batted 1-for-2 with two RBI. Kearney emerged the winning pitcher, striking out six and allowing six runs (four earned) on five hits and four walks. The Rams improved to 3-3 overall this season.

* Baseball: C.B. Aycock 10, Rosewood 0 (5 inn.) -- Jacob Sanford, Charlie Robertson (three RBI) and Brandon Palmer cranked out two hits apiece for the Golden Falcons. Robertson and Palmer each had a stolen base. Kyle Davis (two RBI) and Cameron Kornegay each contributed one hit. Kornegay permitted two hits in a three-inning stint on the mound. Landon Casey tossed two innings of one-strikeout relief.

Middle schools

* Softball: Princeton d. Smithfield Middle -- Casey Mitchell picked up the win inside the pitcher's circle and banged out four hits, including two doubles. Kortney Edwards collected five hits, including two triples and two doubles. Beth Braswell connected on three doubles in a four-hit effort. Megan Bryant and Brianna Myers pounded out three hits apiece, while Emily Ricks supplied two. Princeton (3-0 overall) visits Benson Middle on Monday.
