King takes Conference Carolinas baseball series from No. 1-ranked MOC

MOUNT OLIVE -- Matt Petrone cranked out three hits and Bretton Gouthro slugged his first home run of the season, but No. 1-ranked Mount Olive College dropped a 12-7 decision to Conference Carolinas foe King (Tenn.) College on Sunday afternoon.

The Trojans (22-4 overall, 9-3 CC) lost a conference series at home for the first time since 2006. MOC and King combined to strand 28 runners on base -- seven short of the NCAA Division II record set by Saint Leo and Indianapolis in 1994.

Josh Huffman's home run in the eighth inning and Tyler Gaby's two-run double put the game out of reach for King. Gaby finished the day 4 for 6 with five RBI.

MOC right-hander Derek Justice took the loss.

The Trojans face Armstrong Atlantic State on Tuesday in Sumter, S.C.

Men's lacrosse

PHILIPPI, W. Va. -- Rocky Bowman and Eli Dodgson combined for seven saves between the pipes, and Mount Olive College hammered Alderson-Broaddus, 18-3, in a non-conference men's lacrosse game on St. Patrick's Day.

MOC's Matt Shields, Blake Bennett, Spencer Gelinas, Alex Tindall, Jake Duarte and Matt Devoy scored two goals apiece. Cameron Walsh, Daniel Shields, Jake Hancock, Dylan Woods, Cody Dowling and Aaron Bowlan each notched one goal.

Matt and Daniel Shields had two assists apiece, while Devoy had one.

The Trojans (4-3 overall) return home Wednesday for a Conference Carolinas match against Coker (S.C.) College. Face-off is 7 p.m. at Amon Field.

Men's tennis

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive swepts the doubles courts and claimed five singles points in an 8-1 triumph over Conference Carolinas in-state foe Pfeiffer U on Sunday afternoon.

The Trojans remained unbeaten in eight outings this season.

The tandems Brahm Moolman-Gabriel Santana, Henric Falkenburg-Akio Mariano and Edgar Bub-Rik Wolthuis each triumphed in doubles. Bub-Wolthuis won 9-8 at the No. 1 slot.

Mount Olive (4-0 CC) plays host to Barton on Wednesday afternoon.

Men's volleyball

MOUNT OLIVE -- Angel Dache recorded 11 of his 22 kills in the final two sets and Mount Olive rallied past Limestone (S.C.) College 25-22, 22-25, 18-25, 25-19, 15-10 in Conference Carolinas play.

The Trojans (19-3 overall) remained perfect in 13 league outings this season and extended their school-record win streak to 13 matches.

Dache added 11 digs on defense. Alex Rivero finished with 15 kills, while Lewis Einarson and Adam Miracle added nine kills apiece. Setter Ben Casado passed out 54 assists.

Tim Ebbecke had eight blocks. Einarson and Rivero tallied four blocks apiece. Dan Arnold had eight digs.

MOC plays host to Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday.

Softball

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College junior Carly White logged her second straight complete-game victory inside the pitcher's circle, and freshman teammate Madison Johnston tossed her first collegiate shutout during a Conference Carolinas sweep of King (Tenn.) College on Saturday.

The Trojans defeated the Tornado 4-1 and 3-0.

Katie Moore had two RBI in the opener. White limited King to one hit through five innings.

Johnston (3-1) retired the first five batters she faced in the nightcap. The Tornado put runners aboard on numerous occasions, but couldn't get the timely hit.

Mount Olive (16-6 overall, 5-1 CC) travels to defending conference champion North Greenville today.

Women's tennis

MOUNT OLIVE -- In-state foe Pfeiffer U claimed the final singles point and departed with a 5-4 victory over Mount Olive in Conference Carolinas play Sunday afternoon.

Francesca Ceppi, Roxanne Chouinard and Paulina Delgado each collected a singles point for the Trojans. Ceppi-Molly Sue Lentini prevailed at No. 1 doubles.

The Trojans (5-4, 2-3) entertain Barton on Wednesday.
