Zan Pittman went to work and reaped a couple of rewards in the Family YMCA pool on Monday evening.

Pittman, a seventh-grader at Wayne Country Day, qualified for the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A state championship meet in two events -- the 100 free and 200 free. Pittman touched the wall fourth in the 100 free in 1 minute, 3 seconds. He posted a runner-up time of 2:14 in the 200.

Teammate Robert Glass, a returning state qualifier, ended up fourth in the 50 free and 13th in the 100. A junior, Glass swam the second leg on the Chargers' 200 free relay that placed sixth overall among 12 teams with a time of 2:08.99. Joining Glass were Pittman, John Thompson and James Thompson.

The Chargers' Mike Chen was 10th in the 100 breaststroke.

Wayne Christian's quartet of Hunter Timmerman, Jaxon Anderson, Nick Easom and Connor Jones took 11th in the 200 free relay with a time of 2:33.31. Jones, who recently won his second NCISAA 1-A cross country state title, claimed seventh in the 100 backstroke.

On the girls' side, Wayne Christian's Danielle Gentry grabbed fifth and Wayne Country Day's Kate Thompson claimed sixth in the 50 free. Thompson placed eighth in the 100 free.

Gentry swam the opening leg on the Eagles' 200 free relay that touched the wall in 2:31.82. She was joined by Amy Clarke, Kristina Rousay and Kelsey Kornegay. The Chargers' foursome of Catherine Langston, Anna Rains, Katy Fletcher and Thompson finished eighth in the same event.
