Aycock overpowers RHS, 14-3

Charles B. Aycock waited until the bottom of the seventh inning to get its offense in gear during its season-opening game Tuesday night.

The Golden Falcons started much better in game number two on Thursday. They plated 10 runs in the second inning and defeated Rosewood 14-3 in five innings in non-conference action.

"We wanted to improve on our approach at the plate as a team," C.B. Aycock head coach Charles Davis said. "We wanted to square more balls up, hit more balls up the middle and take more pitches backside, and I thought we did all three pretty well."

The Golden Falcons jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning and broke the game open during their second at-bat. Logan Brown drew a one-out walk, Blake Sutton singled and Bobby Hampton walked to load the bases. An error on the Rosewood infield allowed the first two runs to score.

Cameron Taylor followed with an RBI double and two batters later Bryant Stafford plated two runs with a double of his own. Justin Barbour was hit by a pitch in front of two more Rosewood errors. Brown used his second at-bat of the inning to plate two runs with a double and Hampton added an RBI single.

When the dust cleared, the Golden Falcons led 11-0.

"When you play a team as good as C.B. Aycock you have to be on your A-game because you know that they will be," Rosewood head coach Jason King said. "Tonight we made too many mistakes and there was no way for us to come back."

Will Lane led Rosewood (0-2 overall) with two hits. Will Winslow and Ian Speight each recorded an RBI double.

Taylor and Stafford each finished with two hits for the Golden Falcons (2-0 overall). Stafford led the team with three RBI.

"Any time you can go out and have an inning like we had in the second it takes the pressure off everybody," Davis said. "Both the hitters and the pitchers benefit from getting ahead like that and getting some confidence."

Gregory Johnson tossed three innings to get the mound win. Johnson allowed four hits and two runs. Avery Anderson closed the game out with two innings of relief.

C.B. Aycock plays host to D.H. Conley today at 5 p.m., while Rosewood entertains Lakewood on Monday.
