Brown's walk-off, bases-loaded single gives CBA 12-inning win over D.H. Conley

Baseball

C.B. Aycock 5,

D.H. Conley 4 (12 innings)

* PIKEVILLE -- Logan Brown's walk-off, bases-loaded single lifted Charles B. Aycock to a 5-4, 12-inning victory over D.H. Conley on Friday evening.

Adam Pate started the game-winning rally with a two-out base hit, and swiped second and third base. Bryant Stafford drew an intentional walk and Justin Barbour got plunked to juice the bases for Brown's heroics.

Brown ended the night with two hits.

Pate paced the Golden Falcon attack with three hits and a career-high four stolen bases. Stafford provided two hits, including a two-run home run. Barbour and Cameron Taylor supplied two hits apiece.

Collin DuBose claimed the pitching win in relief.

The Golden Falcons (3-0 overall) launch defense of their Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season championship at home Tuesday against Triton.

South Central 5,

Southern Wayne 4

* DUDLEY -- South Central posted two seventh-inning runs and dealt Southern Wayne a 5-4, non-conference loss Friday evening at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.

Keith Jones led the Saints with two hits and two stolen bases. Ashton Cox belted a two-run home run. Jacob Sasser, Taylor Brock, Tyler Gainey and Jaime Dove each finished with one hit in the defeat.

Jeremy Taylor pitched five solid innings but got a no-decision. Sasser suffered the loss in relief despite not allowing an earned run.

Southern Wayne (1-1 overall) travels to Greene Central on Monday.

South Lenoir 8,

North Lenoir 6 ( 9 innings)

* La GRANGE -- South Lenoir got two runs in the top of the ninth inning and upended archrival North Lenoir 8-6 on Friday night.

Caleb Kearney paced the Hawks at the plate with two hits. Brian Hardy blasted a home run and finished with two RBI. Chastin Radford, JT Williams, Mikal Batts, Zach Casper, Sammy West and Caleb Baird each had one hit.

Landon Letchworth took the mound loss for the Hawks, who threw four pitchers against the Blue Devils. Radford started, while Casper and Kearney threw in relief before Letchworth toed the rubber.

North Lenoir (2-1 overall) begins its Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference season Tuesday at Cleveland.

J.H. Rose 5, Eastern Wayne 4

* Future conference foe JH Rose handed Eastern Wayne a 5-4, non-conference loss Friday evening at New Hope.

The teams will merge into a split-classification 3-A/4-A league in 2013.

Zach Mozingo led the Warriors with two hits and one RBI. Hunter Barnett added two hits. Jeremy Lancaster and Robert Faucette each finished with one hit.

Nolan James suffered the loss on the pitcher's mound. James allowed three runs in 3 2/3 innings and struck out four batters.

Eastern Wayne (0-2 overall) entertains South Johnston in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opener for both teams Tuesday.

North Pitt 7, Spring Creek 1

* SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek managed just three hits en route to a 7-1 loss on Friday afternoon.

Chad Spurgeon, Corey Howell and Chris Nichols each recorded one hit for the Gators.

Luke Miller suffered the loss on the pitcher's mound.

Spring Creek (0-2 overall) plays host to South Lenoir on Tuesday.

North Duplin 7, James Kenan 4

* WARSAW -- Ryan Wolfe and James Britt delivered two hits apiece, and North Duplin knocked off county rival James Kenan, 7-4, on Friday evening.

Konnor Brock (two RBI), Joseph King (two RBI) and Tyler Potter (RBI) each collected one hit. The Rebels benefited from six walks and two hit batsmen, and executed three sacrifice hits.

Breyon Johnson swiped two bases.

Mitchell Thigpen yielded three earned runs on four hits and logged seven strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings of work. Wolfe earned the save with 1 2/3 innings of one-hit, four-strikeout relief.

Softball

North Johnston 3,

C.B. Aycock 1 (8 innings)

* PIKEVILLE -- North Johnston scored two eighth-inning runs in a 3-1, non-conference triumph over previously-unbeaten C.B. Aycock on Friday evening.

The Golden Falcons suffered their first loss in three outings this season.

Brooke Bell emerged the leading hitter for the Golden Falcons with three hits including a solo home run. The Pitt Community College signee also endured the pitching loss, despite striking out 11 Panther batters.

Katie Gaye added two hits and Reagan Herndon tallied one hit.

C.B. Aycock begins defense of its Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season title at home against Triton on Tuesday.

James Kenan 12, North Duplin 1

* WARSAW -- North Duplin dropped a 12-1, non-conference loss against county rival James Kenan on Friday afternoon.

Ansley Hill, Skylar McCarty and Raychel Barwick emerged as the leading hitters for the Rebels. McCarty, a Pitt Community College signee, and senior Alonna Pate each saw time inside the pitcher's circle.

Girls' soccer

Southern Wayne 2, Princeton 2

* DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne kicked off its 2012 campaign with a 2-2, non-conference draw against Princeton on the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex pitch Friday afternoon.

Dixie Ramirez scored on an assist from Alva Perez, who knocked in the Saints' second goal.

Maria Gutierrez collected 12 saves between the pipes.

Southern Wayne (0-0-1 overall) travels to Princeton on Monday.

JV sports

* Baseball: C.B. Aycock 9, Rosewood 0 -- Logan Runyon and Tim Naughton combined for a three-hit shutout. Runyon permitted two hits and logged four strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings, while Naughton supplied 2 1/3 innings of one-hit, five-strikeout relief. Noah West (two RBI) and Jake Naughton cranked out two hits apiece for the Golden Falcons. Garrett Joyner (RBI), Hank Smitherman (RBI), Tim Naughton and Conner Crandall each delivered one hit. C.B. Aycock (2-0 overall) opens its Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference season at home Tuesday against Triton.
