Baseball

North Duplin 15, Union 0 (5 inn.)

* ROSE HILL -- Larry White and Ryan Wolfe combined for a mercy rule-shortened no-hitter in North Duplin's season-opening, 15-0 victory over Union on Tuesday afternoon.

White recorded seven strikeouts and allowed just one walk in four innings of work. Wolfe tossed one inning of relief.

Breyon Johnson, James Kornegay (four RBI) and Ryan Wolfe each had three hits for the Rebels. Tyler Potter (two RBI), Konnor Brock, Joseph King and Larry White each added a hit. Mitchell Thigpen contributed an RBI.

North Duplin (1-0 overall) visits Hobbton on Thursday.

North Lenoir 11,

Greene Central 0 (5 inn.)

* LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir opened its season with an 11-0 pounding of Greene Central in five innings on Tuesday.

Zach Casper led the Hawks with two hits and a pair of RBI. Mikal Batts provided a game-ending grand slam. JT Williamson added a hit and two RBI, while Jake Olejniczak contributed a hit.

Caleb Kearney collected the win on the mound, allowing four hits with five strikeouts in the mercy rule-shortened game.

Chad Murphy tallied two hits for the Rams.

North Lenoir faces Kinston today at historic Grainger Stadium. Greene Central is the guest of Spring Creek on Thursday.

South Lenoir 6, Spring Creek 0

Hobbton 12, Goldsboro 2 (6 inn.)

* J'Juan Brown cranked out two hits and stole two bases in Goldsboro's season-opening, mercy-rule defeat against Hobbton on Tuesday afternoon.

Jared Howard took the pitching loss.

"Our guys were really nervous as a team," said first-year Goldsboro head coach Jackson Massey.

Softball

C.B. Aycock 8, D.H. Conley 1

* HOLLYWOOD -- Meredith Burroughs collected three hits and one RBI, and Charles B. Aycock launched its 2012 season with an 8-1 shellacking of D.H. Conley on Tuesday evening.

Cierra Harris (RBI) and senior catcher Ivy Hartzell provided two hits apiece. Reagan Herndon swatted a fifth-inning, three-RBI triple. William Peace University volleyball signee Connor Davis (two RBI) and third baseman Rachel Jordan contributed one hit apiece.

Senior right-hander Brooke Bell, who has inked with Pitt Community College, threw a complete-game six-hitter inside the circle. She fanned 10 Vikings and surrendered one run.

Aycock (1-0 overall) entertains Wilson Hunt today.

Hobbton 21, Goldsboro 0

* Selena Batts swiped two bases in Goldsboro's season-opening, mercy-rule loss to Hobbton on Tuesday afternoon.

The Cougars play Wallace-Rose Hill on Thursday.

East Duplin 5, Southern Wayne 3

* DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne endured a 5-3, season-opening loss to East Duplin on Tuesday afternoon.

Cierra Moody, Keaton Bradley Claire Kennedy (RBI), Taylor Davis (RBI) and Savannah Wiggins each had a hit for the Saints.

Hailey Warren suffered the loss inside the pitcher's circle.

Southern Wayne visits North Johnston on Thursday.

Havelock 4, Eastern Wayne 3

* Eastern Wayne overcame an early 3-0 deficit, but came up short in a 4-3 loss to Havelock on Tuesday afternoon in New Hope.

Havelock pushed across three runs in the top of the first inning before recording an out.

The Warriors tied the game on Rachel McCollum's three-run home run.

Havelock regained the lead on a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning.

McCollum allowed one earned run on three hits with 12 strikeouts and four walks in seven innings of relief behind starter Starla Strickland. Debbie Mitchell contributed a hit for the Warriors.

Eastern Wayne (0-1 overall) plays host to Greene Central on Thursday.

Union 9, North Duplin 3

* ROSE HILL -- Union handed North Duplin a season-opening, 9-3 loss on Tuesday.

Casey Thornton led the Rebels with two hits. Skylar McCarty and Ansley Hill each had one hit.

Hill recorded four strikeouts inside the pitcher's circle.

North Duplin visits Hobbton on Thursday.

Boys' tennis

C.B. Aycock 8, Rocky Mount 1

* PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock began its season with an 8-1 thumping of Rocky Mount on Tuesday afternoon.

Will Hoff, Michael Kearney, Austin Walker, Chas Hooks and Sam Chastain each recorded a singles win for the Golden Falcons. The doubles teams of Hoff-Kearney, Addison Vail-Walker and Hooks-Chastain were also victorious.

"Today was a big confidence builder for our younger players," Aycock head coach Luke Vail said. "We won some closely contested singles and doubles matches by playing well on the big points."

The Golden Falcons visit North Lenoir today.

Eastern Wayne 7, Cleveland 2

* Eastern Wayne earned a 7-2, season-opening win over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Cleveland on Tuesday afternoon.

Mitchell Kaspar, Sawyer Thompson, Cole Newsome and Je'von Brown each contributed a singles victory. The doubles teams of Russell Turner-Chaz Fitzpatrick, Steven Taylor-Newsome and Kaspar-Smith also won.

The Warriors (1-0 overall, 1-0 ECC) continue ECC play today at home against South Johnston.

Girls' soccer

C.B. Aycock 9, Wilson Beddingfield 2

* PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock opened its season in convincing fashion with a 9-2 rout of Wilson Beddingfield on Tuesday evening.

Emily Borel led the Golden Falcons with three goals. Cheyenne Warrick supplied two goals and Miranda McHale, Alex Strickland, Sam Parrish and Cheyenne Craft each provided a goal. Six different Aycock players also recorded an assist. The Golden Falcons held a 21-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Aycock (1-0 overall) visits Wilson Hunt today.
