Tarboro 48, Greene Central 7
* TARBORO -- Greene Central never figured out a way to solve the always-tough Tarboro defense.
The Rams did not fare much better stopping the Vikings' ground-and-pound offense, either. The end result was a 48-7 victory for the two-time defending N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A (small-school) state champions on Friday night in a pivotal Eastern Plains 2-A Conference clash.
"We didn't move the ball very effectively and I think that (Tarboro) scored every time that they touched the ball," Greene Central head coach Ken Grantham said. "We made too many mental mistakes and there is no way to win when you do that against a good team."
Tarboro jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter when Odis Draughn found the end zone on a 3-yard run. On the Vikings' second possession, Ricky Dozier Jr. added a 3-yard run of his own to make the score 12-0.
Two additional touchdowns in the second quarter gave Tarboro a 28-0 lead before Greene Central got on the scoreboard.
With just seconds to play in the half, Brandon Bishop broke loose for a 5-yard scoring run that cut the Vikings' lead to 28-7. John Lee's extra-point kick sailed through the uprights.
The celebration would be short-lived as Tarboro took its opening possession of the third quarter 70 yards and capped it off with a 55-yard burst by Todd Gurley.
"We had a little spark there at the end of the half and it kind of got the kids excited for a second," Grantham said. "But Tarboro made sure to end that real quick with a touchdown of their own."
Tarboro chewed up 375 yards on the ground and finished with 396 yards of total offense. Greene Central only amassed 135 yards on the ground and 138 total yards. Kenzie Phillips paced the Rams' with 48 yards on the ground on nine attempts. Tray Hill added 41 yards on eight carries.
Greene Central (4-3 overall, 1-2 EPC) will look to snap a two-game losing streak Oct. 14 at Kinston.
South Johnston 73, C.B. Aycock 35
* FOUR OAKS -- South Johnston's vaunted air attack was too much for Charles B. Aycock to handle in a 73-35 loss in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play on Friday night.
The two teams combined 1,096 yards of total offense in a game that did not feature much tackling.
Trojan signal caller Michael Booker put the ball in the air 30 times, completed 20 passes, and tallied 440 yards passing in the win. Booker was also responsible for three of South Johnston's touchdowns.
Do-it-all receiver Chris Crumity hauled in nine catches for 217 yards. Brandon Beasley caught six balls for 124 yards.
Unek Lloyd carried the ball 18 times for 181 yards for the Trojans, who finished with 699 yards of total offense.
The Golden Falcons also put their best offensive foot forward on the strength of quarterback Austin Snowden. The run-first quarterback gained 226 yards on the ground and completed five passes for an additional 147 yards. Snowden accounted for 373 of the Golden Falcons' 397 yards of total offense.
C.B. Aycock (2-5 overall, 0-2 ECC) travels to Cleveland on Friday.
