Baseball
Faith Christian 5, Falls Road 4
* ROCKY MOUNT -- Faith Christian held off Falls Road for a 5-4 season-opening win on Thursday afternoon.
Michael Clarke led the Conquerors with two hits and two runs scored. Matt Lambert worked four innings on the mound and recorded eight strikeouts. Clarke pitched three innings of relief and collected five strikeouts.
Faith (1-0 overall) plays host to Trinity Christian on Monday.
Boys' tennis
Eastern Wayne 9, Cleveland 0
* CLAYTON -- Eastern Wayne lost just one game the entire match in a 9-0 rout of Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opponent Cleveland on Thursday afternoon.
Chaz Fitzpatrick, Mike Barnette, Steven Taylor, Rafael Guerra, Joseph Chaney and Mitchell Kaspar each collected a singles victory for the Warriors. The teams of Fitzpatrick-Barnette, Guerra-Chaney and Taylor-Newsome each prevailed in doubles play.
Eastern Wayne (2-0) visits Rocky Mount on Monday.
Girls' soccer
South Central 5,
Southern Wayne 2
DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne could not find a way to shut down the South Central offense in a 5-2, non-conference loss at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex on Wednesday night.
Nichole Casto scored her fifth goal of the season in the defeat. Cynthia Rivera tallied the Saints' other goal.
Southern Wayne (1-2-0 overall) travels to Rosewood on Tuesday.
Boys' golf
C.B. Aycock 330, Spring Creek 335
Cory Freels earned medalist honors with a 77 and Charles B. Aycock edged county rival Spring Creek, 330-335, on the Lane Tree links Wednesday afternoon.
Michael Fearney (82), Lawrence Burnett (84) and Jordan Byrd (87) completed the Golden Falcons' four-player total. Ryan Morton and Jordan Salter also played.
Jordan Edwards paced the Gators with a 79. James Lancaster carded an 84, followed by Justin Casey (85) and Paul Sullivan (87). Dwayne Brown and Justin Price also participated for the Gators.
Softball
Jones Senior 17, Goldsboro 1
Goldsboro fell to 0-2 with a 17-1 loss to visiting Jones Senior on Thursday afternoon.
Bailee Ellis led the Cougars with a hit and a run scored.
Goldsboro visits Hobbton on Monday.
JV sports
* Baseball: J.H. Rose 9, Southern Wayne 3 -- Taylor Raynor led the Saints with three hits. Jacob Sasser (RBI), Cody Wendorf (RBI), Aaron Denning (RBI) and Kevin Williams each had a hit. Sasser and Wendor both pitched three innings and Clayton Cashwell threw an inning of relief. Southern Wayne (0-1) visits Rocky Mount on Tuesday.
Middle schools
* Baseball: Spring Creek 9, Mount Olive 2 -- The Gators' Trey Hammonds, Allen Core and Chad Spurgeon combined to pitch a two-hitter. Hammonds and Core both contributed triples and Spurgeon was 2 for 3 with a double. Carlos Rodriguez added a double. Spring Creek (2-0) entertains Rosewood on Monday.
