Southern Wayne thumps Rosewood

DUDLEY -- If Friday afternoon is any indication, Southern Wayne's offense could be a force to be reckoned with this season.
The Saints got their bats going early in an 11-1 non-conference win over Rosewood at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex. Southern Wayne had eight different players contribute at least one hit and failed to reach base in only the second inning.
Taylor Brock's two-run home run to center field in the bottom of the first inning put the Saints in front 2-0.
Kevin Wise's RBI double in the home half of the third increased Southern Wayne's advantage to 3-0. Wise later scored on an Eagles' error. Tyler Gainey's two-run homer pushed the lead to 6-0.
Taylor McGill's RBI single in the top of the fourth inning got Rosewood on the scoreboard.
"Southern Wayne has a really talented offensive ballclub," said Eagles' head coach Jason King. "They've got power and they play the small game. That showed tonight with dropping some bunts down. There's a lot of things we need to work on. Where not where we need to be and the scoreboard alone should be enough for them."
Ashton Cox's RBI double and RBI singles from Taylor Raynor and Keith Jones gave the Saints' a 9-1 cushion. Jones later scored on a wild pitch. Wise's RBI double brought the ballgame to an end.
Wise finished with two hits and two RBI. Cody Davis and Gainey (RBI) each had two hits.
"We swung the bat well," said Southern Wayne head coach Trae McKee. "We squared a couple balls up early. It was good to see us string a couple of hits together and kind of keep the pressure on them."
Will Broadwell earned the win on the mound for Southern Wayne. He pitched a complete game and surrendered one earned run on three hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
"Will spotted everything up," said McKee. "His changeup was really, really good. He got a bunch of lazy fly balls of the bat. He had really good command on both sides of the plate."
