Girls' basketball

North Duplin 47, Rosewood 39

Winless no more.

Foul-plagued Jessica Jones and Tierra Ammons combined for 29 points, and North Duplin emerged victorious, 47-39, over Carolina 1-A Conference foe Rosewood on Friday evening.

The Rebels snapped a season-opening, eight-game skid.

"Whew!," said ND coach John Oliver after he exited the locker room.

"They hung in there, made the plays when they had to and we got the win."

Jones' conventional three-point play gave North Duplin its biggest lead, 35-22, with 30.6 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Rosewood (1-11 overall, 0-2 CC) stayed aggressive and drew fouls in its man-to-man defense. Kelsey Kornegay, Alicia Burns and Megann Tyndall converted free throws as the Eagles pulled to within 42-34 with 1:49 to go in the final period.

Jennifer Liles' offensive putback closed the gap to 42-36, but Rosewood got no closer. Jones and Ammons, who fouled out along with starters Angelica Favela and point guard Danielle Heinrichs, hit back-to-back baskets to hold off the Eagles.

Jones, who played on a gimpy ankle, finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Ammons just missed a double-double with 15 points and nine boards. Heinrichs and Tiffany Williams scored six points apiece.

"I thought Tierra was more active tonight than she's been all year," said Oliver. "Jones, if we ever get her healthy, with her and Tierra, we'll be better than we are now."

Kornegay and Burns paced Rosewood's balanced attack with nine and seven points, respectively.

The teams combined for 53 fouls and 74 free throw attempts. Six players fouled out.

South Johnston 58,

Eastern Wayne 41

* Eastern Wayne's trend of unfinished comebacks continued in a 58-41 Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference loss to visiting South Johnston on Friday evening.

The Warriors trailed 37-22 early in the third quarter and managed to cut the margin to 43-37 midway through the fourth quarter.

The Trojans got 11 points from Courtney Woods in the final three minutes to help hold off Eastern Wayne. Woods finished with a game-high 21 points.

"We just couldn't make the baskets," said Warriors' head coach Tyron Wagner. "We got the lead down to six we just couldn't get any closer. We're still young and we're still trying to find the right combination of people. Our scorers just have to score."

Brooke Doherty led Eastern Wayne (2-12, 0-5 ECC) with nine points. Janielle Daniel had eight points. The Warriors visit Cleveland on Tuesday.

Goldsboro 64, Spring Creek 25

* SEVEN SPRINGS -- Goldsboro jumped out to a sufficient lead in the opening minutes and never looked back in a 64-25 beating of Spring Creek on Friday night.

After one period the Cougars held an 18-3 advantage.

Kasheika Wallace led Goldsboro with 20 points. Brandy Johnson added 13 points and Alexus Myles finished with 12 points Talaya Lassiter rounded out the Cougars in double-figures with 11 points.

Jana Price delivered four field goals from beyond the 3-point arc en route to her 19 points for the Gators.

Spring Creek (2-11, 0-2) will travel to North Duplin on Tuesday night. The same evening Goldsboro (10-3, 2-0) will host Ayden-Grifton.

Ayden-Grifton 51, Princeton 32

* PRINCETON -- Ayden-Grifton held the Princeton offense in check for most of the night and the Chargers walked off with a 51-32 win on Friday.

Savanna Massengill led the way for the Bulldawgs with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Princeton (4-11, 0-2) will host Spring Creek on Friday.

C.B. Aycock 47, Triton 43

* PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock overcame an early deficit and held off Triton 47-43 on Friday night.

Imari Howell led the Golden Falcons with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Lauren Parrish added eight points in the win.

C.B. Aycock shot 15-for-18 from the free throw line.

The Golden Falcons will travel to North Lenoir on Tuesday.

Faith Christian 46,

Cornerstone 29

* FAYETTEVILLE -- Faith Christian overcame a slow start and bested Cornerstone Christian 46-29 on Friday night.

Brianna Champion paced the Conqueror offense with 14 points. Christina Powell added 10 points in the victory.

Faith Christian (6-8 overall) will host Hilltop Christian on Monday night.

Crossroads Christian 50, Wayne Christian 39

* Katie Isenhower delivered a double-double, but it was not enough to get Wayne Christian past Crossroads Christian on Friday night.

Isenhower finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Carly Hightower added 10 points and Brooke Barfield added nine points.

Wayne Christian will host Trinity of Raleigh on Monday.

Boys' basketball

Princeton 61, Ayden-Grifton 41

* PRINCETON -- Ben Jacobs tallied his customary double-double and Princeton rolled past Ayden-Grifton on Friday night 61-41.

Jacobs finished with 36 points and 17 rebounds for the Dawgs. Justin Foy added eight points in the win and C.J. Jeffreys recorded 10 assists.

Faith Christian 60, Cornerstone 38

* FAYETTEVILLE -- Faith Christian led throughout a 60-38 win over Cornerstone Christian on Friday night.

Aaron Hill led the way for the Conquerors with 21 points. Wes Caudle added 10 points in the win.

Silas Denlinger completed his first triple double of the season with 12 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

Faith Christian (13-5 overall) will host Hilltop Christian on Monday night.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Christian 56, Crossroads 47 -- Chris Easom and Dylan Smith each finished with 18 points for the Eagles. Smith added eight rebounds. Wayne Christian (12-0 overall) will host Northwood Temple on Tuesday.

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 51, Epiphany 40 -- Dayton Meadows led the Chargers with 15 points. Zach Brewer-Kirby added 14 and Tyler Talton finished with 11. Wayne Country Day will host Faith Christian on Rocky Mount on Tuesday.

* Boys' basketball: Triton 39, C.B. Aycock 35 -- Michael Williams led the Golden Falcons with 12 points and Shakell Powell added eight points. C.B. Aycock fell to 12-2 on the season.

* Girls' basketball: Triton 41, C.B. Aycock 21 -- Audrina Lynch and Raquelle Lawrence each had six points. Quanika Artis added five points.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 52, St. Mary's 21 -- Jamal Forde paced Wayne Country Day with 15 points. Kris Cooley added 10 points. The Chargers will host Faith Christian of Rocky Mount on Tuesday.
