Girls' basketball
Rosewood 29, Princeton 24
* PRINCETON -- Rosewood survived a furious fourth-quarter rally and bested Princeton 29-24 on the Carolina 1-A Conference basketball scene on Monday night.
Trailing 24-14 entering the final quarter, the Dawgs stormed out of the huddle and began to put their offense together. The result was a 10-0 run that tied the game with one minute to play.
The Eagles answered when Alicia Burns sank a turnaround jump shot with 43 seconds on the clock. After a failed Princeton possession, Holly Heath sank one free throw to extend the Eagles' lead to three points.
Burns finished the game off with a pair of free throws in the final seconds. Burns led the Rosewood offense with 13 points. Megann Tydall added four points in the win.
Savanna Massengill led the Bulldogs (3-12, 1-3) with 13 points. Nicole Melvin added seven points.
Princeton entertains Spring Creek on Friday, while Rosewood (2-11, 2-2) is the guest of Ayden-Grifton.
Hilltop 45, Faith Chrsitian 34
* Faith Christian refused to go away for three quarters.
Hilltop took control in the final eight minutes.
Morgan Cooper led the Chargers with a double-double, 14 points and 12 assists, in a 45-34, non-region victory on the N.C. Christian Schools Association basketball scene Monday evening.
Hilltop improved to 15-0 this season.
"We were in position to win up until the fourth quarter, then again, we just couldn't buy a basket," said Faith head coach Eddie Smith. "We had some missed layups ... six or seven, that if we could have hit, not all of them, it might have made a difference.
"We were constantly playing from behind."
The Chargers, of the NCCSA 1-A ranks, led 14-12 at halftime and tried to extend their advantage in the third quarter. Elizabethe Weeks drew a foul on an offensive rebound, and sank both free throws to forge a 22-22 tie with 12.9 seconds left.
Morgan spread six assists among three teammates in the decisive fourth quarter. Hilltop scored six of the first nine points and steadily pulled away as missed shots haunted Faith Christian.
Christina Powell emerged the Conquerors' top scorer with 12 points. Brianna Champion just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds. Weeks finished with eight points and five rebounds.
Faith had 11 team assists on 14 field goals.
Wayne Christian 51, Trinity of Raleigh 36
* Wayne Christian used a balanced scoring attack to hold off Trinity of Raleigh 51-36 on Monday night.
Brooke Barfield, Katie Isenhower and Summer Brathwaite each finished with 10 points for the Eagles. Kayla Kennedy added eight points and eight assists.
Wayne Christian travels to Trinity of Raleigh on Friday.
Boys' basketball
Wayne Christian 56, Trinity of Raleigh 48
* Wayne Christian kicked off a busy week with a 56-48 win over Trinity of Raleigh on Monday night.
Chase Darden led the Eagles with 17 points and six rebounds. Tyler Mooring added nine points and Seth Slusher tallied a team-high 10 rebounds.
Wayne Christian (5-12 overall) entertains the Northwood Temple boys' team tonight.
Middle schools
* Boys' basketball: Wayne Christian 38, St. Mary's 36 -- Seth Harrell paced the Eagles with 24 points. Wayne Christian improved to 4-5 overall. The Eagles will host Northwood today.
* Boys' basketball: Mount Olive 60, Grantham 41 -- Xzavier Pearsoll led the Mount Olive offense with 21 points. Ty Pearsoll added 16 points and 18 rebounds in the win. Dennis Mitchell paced Grantham with 19 points. Mount Olive improved to 9-3 overall.
* Girls' basketball: Norwayne 28, Eastern Wayne 24 -- Ashley Darden emerged the leading scorer for Norwayne with 10 points. Shontell Monk led the Eastern Wayne attack with 14 markers. Norwayne (8-3 overall) travels to Mount Olive on Wednesday.
* Girls' basletball: Brogden 35, Spring Creek 19 -- Jasmine Covington paced the Rams offense with 16 points. Brogden (3-6 overall) plays host to Dillard on Wednesday.
