WILSON -- Wayne Country Day defeated Cape Fear Christian 6-3 in the inaugural Alice Cobb Tennis Classic contested at the Barton College Tennis Complex.
Mack Thompson, Catherine Ford, Katherine Roethling, Mollie Catherine McDonald and Meredith Roethling each emerged victorious in singles play. McDonald-M. Roethling claimed the Chargers' lone doubles point.
WCDS played a second match and led 7-1 when play was suspended due to weather. Thompson, Ford, Katherine and Meredith Roethling and Abbey Pope each secured a singles point.
Thompson-Ford and M. Roethling-Jessica Eisenhauer triumphed in doubles.
The Chargers' third match with Rocky Mount Academy was called due to rain. Greenfield, Elon and Wayne Christian also participated in the event, which honored the Greenfield's coach, whose mother died from a sudden heart attack.
Proceeds benefited the American Heart Association.
