CBA falls to Fike soccer

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock continues to rebuild.

Fike has discovered its team chemistry.

Three players notched one goal apiece and the Golden Demons rolled to a 3-0, non-conference victory at rain-soaked Bedgood Field on Wednesday evening. Fike snapped a four-game skid against Aycock, which suffered just its fourth shutout loss in 91 contests since 2006.

"They were the better side all night," said Golden Falcons head coach Kevin Adkins. "We didn't play very well, didn't move on the field as well as I thought we should be moving. We're still a young team, growing team and learning every game we play.

"Toni (Varacchi) has a really good ballclub this year and will be one of the top teams in the state to beat because they move the ball really well."

Fike (4-0-0 overall) controlled possession from the opening kick and aggressively challenged for every head ball. The Demons showed evidence of good team chemistry on their first two goals, which came out of the flow of play.

Senior midfielder Kyle Lewis ran onto a loose ball, dribbled into Aycock territory and dished off to fleet-footed Ita Beedie. The junior forward got goal-side against his defender and tucked away the game's opening goal into the lower right corner of the net in the 11th minute.

Ten minutes later, the Demons struck again.

Sophomore Carson Davis, like Lewis, aggressively ran onto another loose ball in open space and worked his way through the Aycock defense. Marked by one defender, Davis ripped a goal-scoring shot low toward the back post for a 2-0 advantage.

"I'll take them any way we can get them, but I was definitely pleased with that," said Varacchi of the two-goal surge in 10 minutes. "They were some nice goals. I was pleased with the ball movement. I thought the boys played well and thought they played hard."

Sophomore midfielder Connor Schmidt capped the scoring in the 65th minute with an unassisted goal. The Demons owned a 17-10 edge in shots and 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Aycock keeper Brandon Davis logged eight saves.

"For us, it's a building year and we hope that everything will start falling together later on because we play these games to get ready for conference play," said Adkins.

The Golden Falcons (2-1-0 overall) return to action Saturday against Rockingham County in The Brittany VI. Kickoff is 9:30 a.m. at the Gillette Soccer Complex in Wilson.
