Cross country

Eagles finish third

* Wayne Christian's Connor Jones was the first male runner to cross the finish line, and the Eagles' boys finished third overall during an eight-team meet on Tuesday at Waynesborough Park.

Jones crossed the line first in a time of 18 minute, 23 seconds. Grace Christian's Ian McPherson was second in 19:05. Wayne Christian's Mark Sawyer (21:39) was 10th and Will Massey (22:12) was 12th.

Grace tallied 39 points to finish ahead of second-place Wake Christian's 50. Wayne Christian was third with 67 points.

Grace also earned the top girls' score with 42 points. Wake Christian was second with 53 points. Wayne Christian did not record a team score.

Katrina Pibl of Grace Christian won the girls' race in 21:12. Kayla Kennedy was the Eagles' top female runner finishing in 33rd place with a time of 33:01. Sarah Allen was 36th with a time of 31:45.

Wayne Christian travels to Kerr Vance on Thursday.

Eastern Wayne sweeps Greene Central

* Eastern Wayne swept both the boys' and girls' portions of a dual-team meet with Greene Central on Tuesday. The Warriors' Caleb Cooper was the top male runner with a time of 20:24. Warren Kirkwood finished second in 20:41 ahead of teammate Denzel Benjamin's time of 20:55. Will Crandell was the Rams' top runner, finishing in fourth place with a time of 21:08.

Eastern Wayne won the dual meet 17-40.

The Warriors' Christy Interrante was the top female runner with a time of 26:07. Teammates Kristen Larson (26:10), Heather Black (26:12), Ashley Jarrett (30:09) and Madeline Edwards (31:08) completed the top-five runners.

The Rams did not register a team score.

Volleyball

Rosewood 3, Union 1

* Alyssa Spell handed 11 assists to go with five digs, one service ace and a kill for the Eagles. Rachel Kornegay provided nine kills, five blocks, two aces and a pair of digs. Ellen Morgan had 10 kills, nine digs, four blocks and an ace. Rachyle McAlduff added 12 digs and 10 assists. Laura Vinson picked up 12 digs on defense. Rosewood (3-1 overall) visits Southern Wayne on Thursday.

Grace Christian 3, Wayne Christian 0

* Haley Greenwood supplied eight digs and two aces for Wayne Christian in their Carolina Christian 1-A match. Courtney Albritton contributed seven kills. The Eagles (1-3, 1-1 CCC) play host to Crossroads Christian on Friday.

Bethel Christian 3, Faith Christian 0

* Charity Spencer finished with eight digs and a service ace for the Conquerors in their N.C. Christian Schools Association opener. Elizabethe Weeks had six digs and four aces. Sophomore Abigail Pierce contributed two kills, two digs, two blocks and two aces. Faith Christian (0-1 overall) visits Hilltop Christian on Friday.

RM Prep 3, Goldsboro 2

* Kasheika Wallace and Brandy Johnson had 11 kills apiece in the Cougars' three-set, non-conference loss Tuesday. Goldsboro (1-3 overall) entertains county rival Wayne Country Day on Thursday at Norvell T. Lee Gymnasium.

Soccer

Faith Christian 3, Bethel Christian 0

* Trent Wise scored for the Conquerors in the 15th and 30th minutes in their season-opening win. Silas Denlinger tacked on a goal in the 55th minute and made four saves in goal. Faith (1-0-0 overall) travels to Hilltop Christian on Friday.

Wayne Christian 3, Grace Christian 0

* Gregory Alexander and Chase Darden both scored in the first half for the Eagles in the Carolina Christian 1-A contest. Darden's second goal of the game came off an assist from Chris Smith in the second half. Smith finished with two assists and goalie Chase King recorded eight saves for the shutout. Wayne Christian (3-1-0 overall, 2-0-0 CCC) faces Franklinton Academy on Friday night in the Brittany in Wilson.

Tennis

Wayne Christian 4, Grace Christian 3

* Brooke Barfield, Faith Sutton, Taylor Willman and Reagan Hinton were each victorious in singles play for the Eagles. Grace prevailed in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches and at No. 3 doubles. Both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches were not completed due to rain. Wayne Christian (1-0 overall) entertains Crossroads Christian on Friday afternoon.

Wayne Country Day 5, Cape Fear 1

* Sarah Best, Mack Thompson, Katherine Roethling, Mollie Catherine McDonald and Meredith Roethling each earned a singles point in the Chargers' season-opening match. Wayne Country Day led all three doubles matches, which were not completed due to rain. The Chargers (1-0 overall) entertain Southern Wayne on Monday.

Golf

Walnut Creek LGA

* Hiromi Sueki emerged the play-of-the-day winner during weekly action on the Walnut Creek Country Club links. Jewel Ivey and Novella Zambelli claimed low gross and low net, respectively, in first flight play. Linda Cannon (low gross) and Dot Julian (low net) competed in second flight. Kathy Woodward claimed low putts for the field.

JV sports

* Volleyball: C.B. Aycock d. Princeton 25-23, 16-25, 26-24 -- Meredith Burroughs provided eight kills and served four aces in the Golden Falcons' home-opening victory. Katie Gay and Karen Craig combined for five kills. Amber Rose contributed three aces. Brianna Daniels (two aces) and Madison Martin (ace) also served well. Aycock improved to 1-1 overall.

* Volleyball: Faith Christian d. Bethel Christian 25-21, 16-25 -- Hannah Stocks led Faith with five aces. Alexis Cozine had three kills and Courtney Dale added two kills.

* Volleyball: Rosewood d. Union 25-15, 25-19 -- Scout Anderson and Amanda Beckert passed out 18 and six assists, respectively. Stephanie Hall had five assists and two kills. Anna Ingram supplied seven kills, four aces and two blocks. Rosewood (3-1 overall) travels to Southern Wayne on Thursday.
