Falcons, Chargers, Eagles, Gators head to The Brittany

WILSON -- Four county teams hit the pitch either today or tomorrow morning for The Brittany VI -- a soccer showcase featuring some of North Carolina's top prep boys' programs.

More than 50 teams will play 30 contests in less than a 24-hour span at the multi-field J. Burt Gillette Athletic Complex.

Wayne Country Day (2-1-0 overall) opposes Clinton at 6 p.m. today. Spring Creek, an eastern 1-A finalist last season, meets perennial powerhouse Roanoke Rapids at 8 p.m. Wayne Christian (3-1-0) takes on Franklinton Academy at 8 o'clock, also.

Charles B. Aycock (2-1-0) faces Rockingham County at 9:30 on Saturday morning. The Golden Falcons are making their third consecutive appearance in the two-day event, which honors the late Brittany Willis, a Wilson Hunt graduate who starred on the soccer field.

"I don't know anything about Rockingham," said Aycock head coach Kevin Adkins after Wednesday's loss to Fike. "We're going to work on our mistakes from today (vs. Fike) and hope that we have a better game. (Tonight) showed that we're a little bit out of shape.

"Both teams struggled toward the end."

Seniors Michael Fearney (three goals), Tyler Lynch (two goals) and Travis Musselman (one goal) have accounted for the Golden Falcons' output during their first three contests of the season. Aycock permitted three goals against Fike, including two during a 10-minute span in the opening half.

"We've got a lot of young ballplayers," said Adkins. "Playing a team like Fike helps us out because it shows us where our weaknesses are."

Wayne Country Day puts its modest two-game win streak on the line after a season-opening loss to county archrival Wayne Christian. Senior striker Tyson Pearson has emerged the county's and area's leading scorer with seven goals, including two hat tricks (three goals) in his last three contests.

Wayne Christian is led by Greg Alexander and Chase Darden, who have combined for eight goals this season. Darden notched two goals in a victory over Cresset Christian earlier this week.

Spring Creek, directed by second-year head coach Paul Estrada, is making its first-ever appearance at The Brittany. The Gators have won three of the last four Carolina Conference regular-season championships.
