Ten of 11 teams in the News-Argus readership area share the same goal tonight -- erase the zero in the win column.

No squad is probably more anxious to emerge victorious than Goldsboro, which opened its season with a 27-6 loss to perennial Class 4-A powerhouse Wilmington New Hanover. The Wildcats exposed several defensive weaknesses and held the Cougars' vaunted running attack to 132 yards.

Goldsboro recorded just two first downs in the second half.

"I'm glad we played these guys," said Cougars head coach Eric Reid after the loss. "We found out where we're at tonight. We've got a long ways to go."

One of just four teams at home, the Cougars entertain county foe Eastern Wayne, which dropped its season opener to Wilson Hunt. The Warriors trailed 6-0 at halftime, but permitted three third-quarter touchdowns in a six-minute span.

Goldsboro has won the previous two meetings and is 9-13 against county opposition since 2004.

"We've got to get our face back," said Reid.

Southern Wayne (0-1 overall) kicks off its home schedule against Beddingfield, while Rosewood (1-0) entertains winless Charles B. Aycock. Greene Central (0-1) entertains Ayden-Grifton.

North Duplin, back at full strength, hits the road for a contest at Tri-County member Lakewood. Princeton (0-1) travels to North Moore, Spring Creek (0-1) visits Hobbton and North Lenoir (0-1) looks to snap a six-game skid at North Johnston.

James Kenan (1-0) hopes to build on its come-from-behind victory against Clinton last week. The Tigers are the guests of Jones Sr.

All games kick off at 7:30 p.m.
