Goldsboro had its chances.

Eastern Wayne foiled each opportunity.

Kendra Nash dished out eight assists and the Warriors turned back the Cougars 26-24, 25-21, 25-16 inside Norvell T. Lee Gymnasium on Thursday afternoon.

"That was a well-played (volleyball) match I thought," said Eastern Wayne head coach Tony Parrish. "Goldsboro is going to surprise some people. T.J. (Lancaster) is doing a fine job over here."

But Lancaster took the blame for the loss.

Goldsboro (0-2 overall) had set point in the opening set and Lancaster, who stands behind the service line, thought a ball was going to sail long. He told his team not to play it and the ball dropped in for a Warrior point.

"I'm still thinking about that one," said Lancaster.

The Cougars seized an 8-0 lead in the third set, but couldn't keep the momentum. The Warriors pecked away at the deficit and took command with an 8-0 run of their own with Allyson Newsome at the service line.

"They just worked their way back into it," said Lancaster.

Newsome finished with two kills for Eastern Wayne, which snapped a season-opening, two-game skid. Carissa Turner contributed five kills, five assists and one block. Morgan Smith delivered five kills, one block and one dig.

Kasheika Wallace paced the Cougars with six kills. Brandy Johnson collected four kills and five service aces. Yunely Lares recorded three kills. Sterling Simmons served five aces.

Eastern Wayne entertains Jones Sr. on Monday, while Goldsboro is the guest of Rocky Mount Prep on Tuesday. First serve is 4 p.m. at Everett Gymnasium on the N.C. Wesleyan College campus.
