SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek battled for four quarters and held its own with perennial power South Lenoir before falling 28-13 in its season opener at "The Swamp."

A pair of fumbles cost the Gators two potential early-scoring drives and the Blue Devils took advantage. Ty Kennedy scored twice in the second quarter to give the visitors a 14-0 lead at the intermission.

"We shot ourselves in the foot a couple times and it came back to haunt us," said Spring Creek head coach Aaron Sanders. "We moved the ball on South Lenoir's big defensive line and made some good plays. It just wasn't quite enough."

Will Janning got the Gators on the board with a four-yard scoring run and Ricky Brayboy followed with a five-yard plunge on the home team's next possession. Benson Robles converted the extra point and pulled the Gators within one score at 20-13.

Brayboy finished the night with 175 yards on the ground. The senior quarterback also added 15 yards through the air on one completion. Janning contributed 43 yards on four carries and 15 yards receiving.

Spring Creek (0-1 overall) travels to Hobbton on Friday.
