Area athletes selected to play in annual East-West All-Star showcase

RaSean Brewington, Marcus Cobb and Antonio Ponce get one last chance to excel in their respective sports on the high school scene in mid-July.
The trio will participate in the annual East-West All-Star contests sponsored by the N.C. Coaches Association in Greensboro.
Cobb, who helped guide Charles B. Aycock to a 10-win season, has been chosen to play on the East All-Star football squad. Brewington, from Goldsboro High, moved from an alternate position onto the 12-man team on the East All-Star basketball roster. Ponce, from Spring Creek, will battle for the East in the men's soccer contest.
"This is a deserving accolade for RaSean after an unbelievable year," said Goldsboro basketball coach Patrick Reynell. "The East-West game showcases the best talent in the state and I'm excited that RaSean has been recognized as one of them. His performances during the playoffs proved he is capable to step up his game against the best competition, and I look forward to seeing him do the same in Greensboro."
Brewington is the first Cougar basketball player to wear an East All-Star uniform since DaQuan Joyner appeared in the 2007 classic. Overall, Brewington is the 44th athlete in Goldsboro athletics history to earn NCCA All-Star status.
"This is now the 'cherry on top' for RaSean's amazing career," said Reynell.
Cobb is the seventh Aycock football player, and 13th athlete in school history, to play in the annual showcase. An all-Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference selection in 2009, Cobb rushed for nearly 2,000 yards and a county-leading 28 touchdowns.
Cobb averaged 151.3 yards rushing per game and also had one touchdown reception. The Golden Falcons advanced to the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.
Ponce helped the Gators enjoy their most-successful season in program history. He anchored a defense that recorded a school-record 14 shutouts and permitted just one goal in four other contests.
Spring Creek advanced to the NCHSAA eastern championship game for the first time in school history. Ponce and his teammates were just the second team in county lore to appear in a regional title contest.
Ponce is just the second Gator to achieve NCCA All-Star status.
