PIKEVILLE -- The defense was forgettable.
The offense was memorable.
Charles B. Aycock pounded out 17 hits and slipped past Wilson 8-7 in a Junior American Legion baseball game Monday evening.
Three defensive miscues allowed Wilson to trim an 8-4 deficit to the 8-7 final in the seventh inning. Aycock finished with five errors in the seven-inning game.
"We've played good defense all year long," said Aycock head coach Nelson Cunningham. "I think we got up 7-1 with the ball flying out of here, having a good time and we had a couple of bad hops that ate our infielders up.
"I just think we had one of those nights."
Aaron Champion worked two innings of relief to collect the save on the mound. Cameron Taylor surrendered four runs (three earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and no walks to earn the win.
Aycock (13-2 overall) threatened in the bottom of the first inning with runners on first and second base, and no outs. Post 13 starting pitcher Cory Nygard used a strikeout and an inning-ending double play escape trouble.
Nathan Boykin's RBI groundout in the top of the third gave Wilson a 1-0 lead. Tyler Farmer's two-run home run to center field in the home half of the
third put Aycock in front 2-1.
Aycock erupted for five runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth. Adam Pate provided a two-run single and Farmer followed with a two-run homer to right, making it 6-1. Farmer went 4-for-4 at the plate with two homers and four RBI.
"Tyler Farmer, he's on fire up there," said Cunningham. "We found the gaps and the boys did what we needed to do."
Pate (2 RBI) and Taylor had three hits apiece.
Bryant Stafford's RBI double pushed the lead to 7-1. Aycock collected 14 hits through the first four innings.
Dillon Howard's RBI single in the top of the fifth trimmed the margin to 7-2. Spencer Boykin's RBI groundout cut the deficit to 7-3. Dustin Alford followed with an RBI single.
Post 13 left the bases loaded in the fifth.
Taylor's RBI double in the bottom of the sixth extended the lead to 8-1. Taylor finished with three doubles and an RBI.
Aycock visits Wayne County North today.
