DUDLEY-- After watching early leads evaporate during the last two games Charles B. Aycock, turned its fortunes around against Wayne South and captured a 6-2 victory in Junior American Legion baseball action on Thursday night.
The Golden Falcons never trailed after their first at-bat.
Adam Pate reached on an error to open the contest and scored on Tyler Farmer's two-run home run.
"This was absolutely the best game we have played the entire season," said C.B. Aycock head coach Nelson Cunningham. "We stayed focused and every guy added something to the game."
Wayne South cut the 2-0 deficit in half in the bottom of the second inning. Tyler Gainey scored on a suicide squeeze that was perfectly executed by Keith Jones.
Bunting the baseball quickly became the story of the night.
C.B. Aycock added a run in the top of the fourth inning when Travis Musselman laid down a bunt that went for a base hit and allowed Justin Barbour to score. A second bunt single in the top of the fifth led to a run as Josiah Laser plated Bryant Stafford and increased the C.B. Aycock lead to 5-1.
"That's the game. We didn't make the plays on defense on the bunts," said Wayne South head coach Trae McKee. "We gave them extra outs and it hurt us."
Cameron Taylor finished off a perfect four-hit night at the plate in the sixth inning with an RBI single that plated Farmer and made the score 6-1.
Wayne South (12-5 overall) got a home run from Taylor Brock in the bottom of the sixth, but could get no closer.
Adam Pate tossed six innings to earn the mound win for C.B. Aycock (10-2 overall). Stafford entered the game in the seventh inning and shut the door on any potential Wayne South rally.
"Adam was smart and he worked the strike zone effectively," said Cunningham. "Then we went to Stafford and he was able to throw strikes and keep guys off balance."
C.B. Aycock travels to West Craven for a doubleheader on Sunday. Wayne South visits North Lenoir on Saturday.
