Wayne Christian's McCollum tosses no-hitter, fans 9 Faith-RM batters

Rachel McCollum recorded a no-hitter as Wayne Christian hammered Faith Christian-Rocky Mount, 16-0, on Friday afternoon.

McCollum recorded nine strikeouts in the mercy-rule contest, which ended after 41/2 innings. McCollum added two hits offensively for the Eagles, who pounded out nine hits as a team and benefited from 12 walks issued by the Patriots' pitching staff.

Kayla Kennedy swatted an inside-the-park home run as part of a three-hit effort. Courtney Barrow doubled and tripled in two at-bats. Abigail Shenk added two hits.

Wayne Christian (3-0 overall) entertains county foe Spring Creek on Tuesday.

Saints triumph

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Southern Wayne snapped a season-opening, five-game losing streak with a 20-17 conquest of county rival Spring Creek on Friday afternoon.

Charity Wright, Hope Rhodes and Darian Edwards collected two hits apiece for the Saints. Teammates Kayla Gracyk, Brittany Pate, Sarah Nelson and Taylor Davis contributed one hit apiece.

Jourdyn Holsinger emerged the winning pitcher.

The Saints (1-5 overall) begin Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play at home Tuesday against Triton.

Aycock falters

PIKEVILLE -- Autumn Pittman provided half of Charles B. Aycock's offense in a 4-1, non-conference loss on Friday evening.

Pittman doubled in a two-hit performance, and also suffered the mound loss. The right-hander yielded four earned runs on 10 hits, and fanned five Viking batters.

Brooke Bell contributed an RBI single. Sarah Marcus cranked out one hit.

The Golden Falcons (4-2 overall) begin defense of their Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season title Tuesday at North Lenoir.

Dawgs fall to Trojans

PRINCETON -- A four-run, seventh-inning rally lifted South Johnston past county rival Princeton, 6-3, in non-conference action.

Tylan George and Hannah Woodard each recorded two hits in the loss. Hannah Wood and Kaitlyn Peedin finished with one hit apiece.

Traci Bridgers tossed a complete game for the Bulldawgs and struck out three batters before taking the loss.

Princeton (3-2 overall) is the guest of Smithfield-Selma on Wednesday.

Baseball

GC wins in EPC

TARBORO -- Greene Central picked up a 7-4 victory over Eastern Plains 2-A Conference rival Tarboro on Friday night.

Wes Sowers tossed four no-hit innings for the Rams and struck out seven batters.

Sowers also led Greene Central at the plate with two hits, including a double, and two RBI. Zach Chase added three hits and two RBI.

Greene Central (4-2 overall) entertains Kinston on Tuesday.

Tigers prevail

BURGAW -- James Kenan scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning as they bested Tri-County 1-A foe Pender 6-5 on Friday afternoon.

Tyler Haney earned the win on the pitcher's mound with three innings of solid relief. Haney allowed just one hit and struck out seven batters.

Haney also paced the Tigers at the plate with two hits and one RBI. Michael Moore, Ricky Langston and Gunner Wolz each provided one hit in the comeback win.

James Kenan (3-2 overall) travels to Heide Trask on Tuesday.

JV sports

* Baseball: Eastern Wayne 7, J.H. Rose 6 -- Ryan Mitchell bashed the game-winning hit in the top of the seventh inning. Josh Dixon tallied three hits for the Warriors. Jake May and Tyler Ware each finished with two hits apiece. Jeremy Lancaster tossed four innings and struck out three batters en route to a no-decision. Justin Lee threw the final three innings to earn the win on the pitcher's mound.

* Baseball: Southern Wayne 2-3, Hoggard 10-2 -- Wesley Grady belted the game-winning, walk-off single as the Saints split a non-conference twinbill with the Vikings. Thomas Kelly batted 2-for-3 with an RBI. Matt Sparks, who scored on Grady's hit, doubled and tripled in a 3-for-6 peformance. Jacob Sasser claimed the mound win. Early defensive miscues allowed Hoggard to win the first game.

Middle schools

* Baseball: Wayne Christian 16, Myrtle Grove 2 -- Cameron Foss and Tanner Rose combined to strike out seven batters and allowed only one hit. Chandler Gentry and Bryce Norman paced the Eagles at the plate with three hits apiece. Tyler Mozingo finished 2-for-2. Wayne Christian travels to Cary Christian on Tuesday.
