Warriors shut out Trojans

South Johnston stayed in the game for one half Monday night.

Eastern Wayne pulled away for a 5-0 victory after intermission in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference girls' soccer opener for both squads at Little Big Horn.

Early in the game both teams took time to get a feel for their opponent.

With scoring chances coming few and far between, Warriors' head coach Jorg Wagner implored his team to put pressure on the Trojans defensive line.

In the 27th minute, Brandy Dean broke loose on a long ball played into the box by Lindsay Underwood. Dean buried the shot and gave the home team a 1-0 advantage that it would maintain until halftime.

"With our speed in the front, we know that we are going to create chances at some point," said Wagner. "We have four players that we can rotate at forward and they all have speed."

Eastern Wayne increased the pressure in the second half, but could not find the mark on multiple one-on-one situations. As the scoring opportunities mounted, the Warriors amped up their midfield play and kept the ball in the Trojans' defensive zone.

In the 61st minute, Dean added an insurance goal on an assist from Jenna Martin. Less than two minutes later, Janielle Daniel belted home a shot from the left point. Dean completed her hat trick (three goals) three minutes later on an assist from Daniel.

"I thought that the biggest difference in the second half was that we played much more aggressive in the midfield," said Wagner. "Once we got to three-nothing, I felt pretty good about where we were in the game."

Maddie Doherty added a goal for the Warriors in the 73rd minute. Underwood notched her second assist.

Danielle Daniel tallied four saves in net for Eastern Wayne. The Warriors out-shot the Trojans 16-5 on the night.

Eastern Wayne (2-4 overall, 1-0 ECC) travels to Triton on Wednesday.
