Knights embarrass Trojans, 20-8

LAURINBURG -- St. Andrews did it again.

The Knights erupted for nine runs during the first two innings, and handed No. 2 -ranked Mount Olive College an embarrassing 20-8 defeat on the Conference Carolinas baseball scene Sunday afternoon.

St. Andrews (6-23-1 overall, 5-12 CC) claimed its second consecutive conference series. The Trojans, the Southeast Region's top-ranked team, exited 26-3 overall and 12-3 against league opposition.

All nine starters had hits for the Knights and freshman Kyle Tate earned his first collegiate win on the mound. He yielded four runs on seven hits in six-innings.

Six MOC hurlers combined to give up 17 hits. Freshman first baseman Daniel Oliver led St. Andrews' offense with three hits, including a fifth-inning home run. Senior Samson Williams extended his hitting streak to 15 games, while sophomore Ethan Powell contributed three hits.

Daniel Coffey stroked his fifth and sixth homers of the season and finished with three RBI for the Trojans. Jeremy Nowak belted his 13th home run and has hit safely in all 29 MOC contests this season.

Junior Curtis Hudson suffered his pitching loss in five decisions.

The Trojans return home Tuesday to start a two-day, two-game series with Southeast foe Armstrong Atlantic State (Ga.) University. The teams play at 7 p.m. Tuesday and 2 p.m. Wednesday.
