LaGRANGE -- Goldsboro scored 51 second-half points as they bested former Eastern Plains 2-A Conference rival North Lenoir 72-71 on Wednesday evening.

After their second consecutive slow start, the Cougars exploded for 25 points in the third quarter thanks to an several assists by Devonte White and five 3-pointers from Demetrio Irby.

"Once again we started slow and got behind," said Goldsboro head coach Patrick Reynell. "But my guys responded and they gave the kind of effort that we needed to win."

Resean Brewington paced the Cougars with 22 points. Irby added 20 points and teammate Jarran Reed tallied 10 points.

Goldsboro (4-3 overall) entertains county rival Southern Wayne on Friday night.

Dawgs roll

NEWTON GROVE -- Princeton jumped out to an early 20-point lead and never looked back in a 77-64, non-conference win over Hobbton on Wednesday evening.

Benton Myers led the Dawgs with a career-best 24 points. David Gurganus added 16 points. Andre Nixon tallied nine points and nine rebounds.

Princeton (3-3 overall) will play host to South Johnston on Friday night.

Saints earn win

WILMINGTON -- Justin Artis led the way with 13 points and Southern Wayne earned a 45-34 win at Wilmington Laney on Tuesday night.

Khari Faison added eight points and eight rebounds for the Saints. Rashadd Hill grabbed eight rebounds.

Southern Wayne (6-3 overall) travels to Goldsboro on Friday.

Gators downed

FARMVILLE -- Spring Creek could not hold on to a slim early lead and eventually fell 76-63 at Farmville Central on Wednesday night.

Melvin Deveaux paced the Gators with 15 points and six rebounds. Adam Haggerty added 14 points and Kenneth Freeman recorded 11 points and 11 boards.

"We will leace here dissapointed at a missed opportunity," Spring Creek head coach Taylor Jones said. "But with that said, I think this team showed a lot of toughness and showed just how good they can be."

Spring Creek (4-3 overall) will be back in ation on Dec. 28 at the North Johnston Christmas Tournament. The Gators will play Durham School for the Arts in the opening round.

Wrestling

Eagles cruise

Rosewood triumphed in six of 10 contested matches and received four forfeits in a 60-19, non-conference conquest of Princeton on Wednesday evening.

The match does not count toward the Carolina 1-A standings since the teams will meet in mid-January for a day-long dual meet to determine the regular-season league champion.

Matt Coley (140 pounds), Josh Pipkin (152), Jacob Roberts (160), Jamie Wooten (171), Scott Mason (189) and 215-pounder Cameron Lane each pinned their respective opponennt. Seth Mitchell, Chris Lane, Nick Quillen and Zach Behrend each drew a forfeit.

"I thought Cameron, Scott and Jamie are starting to look very solid in the upper weights," said Rosewood coach Bill Edmundson. "The last couple of seasons we have struggled there and as of tonight, we seem to be turning that corner."

Princeton received individual wins from Monquel Eason (130), Drew Malarchik (135), B.J. Creech (145) and heavyweight James Hawley. Hawley had the night's fastest pin, a 22-second decision against Chris Campbell.

Rosewood (8-4 overall) returns to action Friday in a four-team, non-conference meet at Wilson Hunt. The Eagles will also wrestle Smithfield-Selma and county rival Charles B. Aycock.

Girls' basketball

Eagles bested

Rosewood could not slow down a second-half onslaught in a 54-37, non-conference loss to Lakewood on Wednesday evening.

Neither team could find their offensive identity in the opening minutes as the game crawled along at a snail's pace. Rosewood was held to just nine points at the intermission.

The Leopards executed their offense in the second half. They opened with an 8-0 run and pulled away to the road win. Nikki Devicentis led Lakewood with 14 points.

Angelica Knight paced Rosewood with eight points. Logan Bill contributed seven points, while Taylor Johnson knocked down four points.

The Eagles (1-8 overall) play host to C.B. Aycock on Friday.

Cougars dropped

LaGRANGE -- For the second time in as many nights a late rally fell short for Goldsboro as they endured a 53-48, non-conference loss against North Lenoir at Wooten Gym.

The Cougars trailed for much of the game before coming back to take a two-point advantage in the final minutes. The Hawks immediately answered with four quick points to seal the win.

Akeyanna Whitlor tallied 18 points and eight rebounds for Goldsboro. Alexus Myles added 10 points in the defeat.

Goldsboro will play host to Southern Wayne on Friday night.

Dawgs go down

NEWTON GROVE -- Tylan George posted a double-double in Princeton's 45-39, non-conference loss to Hobbton on Wednesday evening.

George scored 14 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Teammate Rebecca Harlan just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine boards.

Princeton welcomes county foe South Johnston on Friday.

* Boys' basketball: Wilmington Laney 52, Southern Wayne 42 -- Quintae Bradshaw and Jamil Price each finished with 10 points for Southern Wayne. The Saints (4-2 overall) visit Goldsboro on Friday.

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro 58, North Lenoir 48 -- Demarion Henderson led the Cougars with 16 points. Octavius Alston added 15 points and Moses Ramsey III tallied 10 points. Goldsboro improved to 7-0 overall.
