North Duplin boys have tough outing vs. Lejeune

CALYPSO -- There are a few dubious feats that no team ever wants to be associated with. One is a scoreless quarter in basketball.
North Duplin put up a zero during third-period play Friday evening and suffered a 58-38, non-conference loss to Lejeune.
After trading baskets for most of the opening half, the Devilpups opened the second half with a flourish and the Rebels offense went cold. Lejeune out-scored North Duplin 16-0 in the decisive eight-minute stretch.
"We just could not hit anything, and couldn't get anything going," said Rebels' head coach Ricky Edwards. "It's hard to stay in the game if you don't make a single basket. We missed a few open looks and we started to press."
A short rotation handcuffed by foul trouble added to the Rebels' problems. Starting point guard Devin Oliver fouled out early in the second half which gave Edwards one available reserve on the bench.
After a thunderous two-handed dunk by Devilpups forward Gavin Allen, a North Duplin turnover led to a layup. Rebels forward Jimmy Smith was called for a foul on the play and issued a technical foul as the players separated.
Two fouls in 10 seconds sent Smith to the bench with five fouls.
Edwards was down to five players.
"You have to play smart and not get into that situation," said Edwards. "I thought those five guys played hard, but with no subs you can't be very aggressive on defense."
Craig Wilson and Allen each registered a double-double for the Pups. Wilson provided 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Allen delivered 11 points and 12 boards. Teammate Tyrone Brooks knocked down 11 points.
James Kornegay led the Rebels with 15 points. Marcus Kornegay finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Shayne Deaver added five points and six boards, and handled the point guard duties in the second half.
"Shayne plays hard every night and he gives it all he has," said Edwards. "He is not really a point guard but I thought he did a pretty good job."
North Duplin (0-6 overall) visits North Johnston on Monday.
