Walter Richard Bruce Jr., 92, died peacefully July 4, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.

He was preceded by his beloved wife of 66 years, Carla Faye Davis Bruce.

He is survived by their children, Walter Richard Bruce III (Terry) of Dublin, Calif., Melanie Williams (Tony) of Goldsboro, N.C., and Lori Millberg (John) of Wendell, N.C.;15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his youngest son, Perry Bruce; grandson, Tahj Bruce; great-grandson, Tripp Latiolais; and his sister, Betty Harvey.

Walter was born in Fairfield, Ala.

Upon his high school graduation during World War II, he enlisted in the United States Navy, and was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater on a tank landing ship, the LST-715, and participated in the battles of Iwo Jima, Saipan and Okinawa.

Following his naval service, he earned a degree in electrical engineering from Auburn University, and began his work career with GE.

He was recalled into United States Army service during the Korean War after which he began a long career in the Bell System working initially for Western Electric in Greensboro, N.C., and later for Bell Laboratories.

Upon retirement, he and Carla returned to North Carolina, living in Washington and then Wake Forest, and spent their final years at Brookdale Country Day Road, formerly The Pines in Goldsboro.

The family would like to express its deepest appreciation to everyone at The Pines for their many years of kindness and care for both Walter and Carla, as well as to the special people at Community Home Care and Hospice and Kitty Askins Hospice Center, who cared for Walter during his final days. We’d also like to thank the wonderful people at Oak Forest Church of Christ for their love, service and care.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Community Home Care and Hospice, Kitty Askins or your local Hospice provider or Oak Forest Church of Christ.

There will be a visitation at Howell Funeral Home in Goldsboro at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2018, followed by a funeral at 11 a.m. officiated by Lennie Reagan.
