SELMA H. LANWAY

July 1, 1931-Dec. 11, 2017

Selma Ruth Hardison Lanway, 86, Snow Hill, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2017.

A native of Greene County, she was born July 1, 1931, to William Arthur Hardison and Beadie Beaman Hardison, the eighth of 12 children.

She grew up on the farm with her family, and graduated from Snow Hill High School.

In the early 1950s, Selma moved to Miami, Fla., married Erwin "Buddy" Lanway and worked in retail for a period of time.

It was there that her son, Mark Hardison Lanway, was born in 1957.

Around 1980, Selma moved back to her beloved Greene County to be close to her mother and sisters and to live in her recently built house on the family farm.

At this time, in addition to working in retail, Selma became active at Free Union Original Free Will Baptist Church, particularly with the Silver Threads group.

She loved to travel and see new sights, and she did so extensively throughout the United States on many bus trips.

After Mark died in 1992, she became quite active in Compassionate Friends, a support group for those who have experienced the death of a child.

Selma is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Kay Kearney and Richard Kearney of Goldsboro; two sisters-in-law, Betty Lou Hardison and Monique Hardison both of Snow Hill; and 23 nephews and nieces, Cyndy Benton, Jenny Blizzard, James Hardison, John Hardison, Beadie Moore and Brenda Moore all of Snow Hill, Bruce Hardison of Walstonburg, Barbara Joyner of Farm-ville, Judy Radford of Greenville, Jeff Hardison of Winterville, Rick Kearney of Kinston, Joan Price of Goldsboro, David Kearney of Pikeville, Karen Hanny of Henderson, Joel Hardison of Asheboro, Michael Hardison of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Russell Matthews of Batesburg-Leesville, S.C., Paul McLaughlin of Greenwood, S.C., Connie Gillenwater of Hampton, Va., Linda Hardison of Newport News, Va., Ed and Jessie Jones both of Wilmington, Del., and Ken Jones of Hockessin, Del.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service, with the Rev. Kelley Smart and the Rev. Phil Wood officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Snow Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Free Union Original Free Will Baptist Church, 2573 Firetower Road, Walstonburg, N.C., 27888.
