MARGARET V. JERNIGAN

Oct. 28, 1927-Oct. 3, 2017

Margaret Vassar Jernigan, 89, Goldsboro, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2017, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Margaret was born in Albany, Ga., Oct. 28, 1927, to the late Brinker S. Vassar and Margaret Prescott Vassar.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Edward Williams Jernigan Sr.

Margaret worked with her husband as bookkeeper for the family business, Sam Jernigan and Sons Furniture Co., now Jernigan Furniture.

She was a member of Madison Avenue Baptist Church for 60 years, where she served as a pitcher on the women's softball team and as a Cub Scout leader of Pack 4.

Margaret's natural competitive spirit led her to enjoy a broad spectrum of sports. She loved swimming, and was one of the first women to become a WSI instructor, and served as the coach of the Seaboro Swim Team.

Margaret bowled competitively in the semi-pro league with North Carolina's number one bowler at that time. She retired from her bowling career to marry and start her family with the love of her life, Ed Jernigan.

Perhaps her greatest sports love was golf, which she played every chance she got, and in later years, would watch on television.

She also enjoyed watching any sport the University of North Carolina Tar Heels were playing.

A service to celebrate Margaret's life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, 2017, at Seymour Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Randy Outland officiating.

The family will greet friends following the service.

A private inurnment for the family will be at First Presbyterian Church columbarium.
