GENE B. MERCER

Nov. 2, 1942–Sept. 21, 2017

Gene Beauregard Mercer, 74, long time resident of Mount Olive, N.C., passed away just before midnight on Sept. 21, 2017, while at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A native of the Beulaville area of Duplin County, he was the son of the late Frank and Lillian Thomas Mercer. He was a graduate of Beulaville High School, and then attended North Carolina State University where he received both a bachelor and master’s degree. For a time, he was a mathematics instructor at Mount Olive College, and even after he followed another career path, the college remained very near and dear to him.

Mr. Mercer established Southern Furniture and Interiors in Mount Olive, which later became known as T.B.E.

Mr. Mercer is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Angus Wilton Mercer and Joyce Maxwell Mercer of Charlotte; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty Sue Mercer Miller and William “Bill” Miller of Clinton; a nephew, Andrew Keaton Miller; and nieces, Ronda Sue Miller, Anna Jill Miller Williamson, Holly Mercer Fletcher, Laurey Mercer Walbert, Kimberly Mercer Bowers, and Cathy Mercer Everidge, and their families. Also surviving are his personal assistants, William and Alejandro Garza, who provided daily companionship and care.

There will be a service of remembrance at a date to be announced.
