Charles Aaron Christopher, 86, an Air Force veteran, died with his family at his side on Wednesday afternoon, July 19, 2017, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Christopher was born on Oct. 22, 1930 in Brunswick County, Va., and was the son of the late Landon Kelly Christopher and Mary Ella Johnson Christopher.

He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and retired after 22 years of service with the rank of Master Sergeant. Mr. Christopher's valor and skill was recognized with numerous decorations.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 43 years, Elizabeth Parrish Christopher; and siblings, Nancy Brown, Lois Summers, Joseph Christopher and Alice Christopher.

Charles and his wife, Elizabeth, found a loving and supportive church family at Grace Baptist Church.

He leaves to cherish his memories four children: Betty Richardson (Vance) of Virginia, Gregory Abernathy III (Deborah) of Pikeville, Katherine Hawkins (Kenneth) of Goldsboro, and Kevin Christopher (Pattie) of Pikeville.

He leaves his precious grandchildren, Ann Tyus (Charles), David Richardson (Robin), Lori Bradley (Ellery), all of Virginia; Dave Abernathy (Sharron) of Goldsboro, Elizabeth Fleming (Dillon) of Pikeville, and Jennifer Cooper (Nathan) of Willow Spring. Also, seven special great-grandchildren, Chuck Tyus of Virginia, Brock Tyus of New York, Hailey, Blake and Collin, all of Goldsboro, and Rylee and Ella of Pikeville; stepgrandson, Scott Mcleese (Katy) of Cape Carteret; stepgreat-grandchildren, Alex, Makayla and Keller of Cape Carteret; special nephews and niece, Joseph Christopher, Waverly Christopher, Benjamin Christopher, and Barbara Davenport, all of Virginia; and special friends, Danny and Betty Thibeaux of Goldsboro.

Special thanks to his wonderful caregivers, neighbors, church friends, and the nurses and doctors who cared for him and his family in so many kind and thoughtful ways through the years and during this time of loss.

Funeral services will be held at Mr. Christopher's home church, Grace Baptist Church, on Saturday, July 22, at 2 p.m. The burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church.

Mr. Christopher's love for his Lord, family and sports will be remembered by his devoted family and friends. Even in his death, we are reminded of Isaiah 41:10, "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."
