Marguerite Waldenmaier Whitley, Stantonsburg, died June 20, 2017.
Funeral Friday 1 p.m. Stantonsburg United Methodist Church, followed by visitation. Interment Stantonsburg Cemetery.
She was born March 17, 1925, in Alamance County.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernhardt A. and Helen Margaret Hill Waldenmaier; a sister, Elizabeth Hansen; brother, Bernhardt Waldenmaier; and two nephews.
She is survived by her husband, Daniel Whitley Sr.; son, Dr. Daniel Whitley Jr. and wife, Beki, of Goldsboro; granddaughter, Sarah Whitley of Goldsboro; and grandsons, Dr. Daniel Whitley III of New Bern and William Macon Whitley of Greenville.
Her education began in Fayetteville public schools, and she continued on to Woman's College in Greensboro, class of 1945, for her Bachelor of Arts degree.
Teaching was her profession, and she taught primary education in Sanford, Stantonsburg, Eureka and Goldsboro Christian School.
April 6, 1947, she married Daniel Whitley of Stantonsburg in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Beaufort.
She enjoyed a full life as a mother, teacher and civic and community participant.
A member of Stantonsburg United Methodist Church, she taught Sunday school for more than 18 years, was church historian, chairperson of the worship committee and president of the United Methodist Women and was on the administrative council. She served in several positions in the Rocky Mount District of the United Methodist Church.
In Stantonsburg, she was an organizing member of the original Stantonsburg Public Library Board, and served several years as a Cub Scout den mother.
With Dan, she helped establish a public playground in town by obtaining a long-term lease with grant funding.
For several years, she was on the Wilson County Committee for the Kathryn N. Reynolds Scholarship Committee for the University of North Carolina Greensboro.
She was honored to serve as co-chairman for Stantonsburg during the 130th celebration of Wilson County.
As Dan was a veteran of World War II, she became a member and past president of the Auxiliary of American Legion Dail-Bell Post No. 245.
She served as worthy matron of the former Darden Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter No. 265.
History was always of interest, which led her into several hereditary societies as John W. Dunham Chapter No. 374, United Daughters of the Confederacy; Thomas Hadley Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; Eleanor White Dare Chapter of Colonial Dames of the XVII Century; Descendants of Ancient Planters and the Jamestown Society; and Colonial Dames of America.
She aligned her interest with membership in the Daughters of American Colonists; Descendants of the Ancient Planters of Virginia; Order of the First Families of North Carolina; National Society of Magna Carta Dames and the North Carolina Society of Magna Carta Dames; Colonial Order of the Cross of Charlemagne in the United States of America; the Plantagenet Society; the Sovereign Colonial Society of Americans of Royal Descent; and the National Society of Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims.
